Deceiving Ourselves: 10 Lies That Organisations Tell

The talk is for those who are struggling to breakdown barriers in organisations and want to know that they are not alone with their struggles. Using a fictitious case study of a product development organisation (Magnum Opus), we will talk through the antipatterns that they are facing with an attempt to 'do' Agile. We want to try and disrupt the idea that organisational change has to be slow.

The talk is designed to be at odds with many other conferences talks attended. It is rooted in empathy and humor, with anecdotes and audience participation to make it personal. It is a 'troublemaker' session, structured to disrupt the status quo that is present in many organisations by pointing out the stupidity (in many cases!) of process.

Instead of focusing on goals, the 'Lies' that are talked about are system-focused i.e. consider the process rather than the aim, and only by changing the system can goals be purposely achieved.

Leading from the Sandbox: How to Empower and Inspire Your Team

In today's rapidly changing business environment, traditional leadership models are being upended in favor of more dynamic and responsive approaches. We unveil 'Leading from the Sandbox,' a revolutionary leadership paradigm that champions self-organization and team empowerment within the Agile framework. Drawing on our profound experience and international speaking engagements, we will guide participants through the process of creating a 'sandbox' — a space where boundaries are defined, yet within which teams can explore, innovate, and flourish autonomously.

In this session, we distill the essence of our global expertise into actionable strategies, allowing leaders to navigate the delicate balance between providing direction and fostering an environment of creativity and self-determination. Attendees will gain insights into constructing coherent team roles and goals that align with organizational visions while promoting individual growth and initiative. Through a blend of interactive exercises and real-world case studies, leaders will emerge with a clear blueprint for nurturing a culture where team members feel psychologically safe to take risks, contribute ideas, and drive their projects forward — all hallmarks of the agile and resilient teams essential for success in the digital age.

Why Psychological Safety is Key for Innovation

In today's world, organizations have to innovate. If they don’t, they will get eaten by those that do. At the same time, innovation is a tricky thing. According to the late prof. Clay Christensen only 5% of a whopping 30000 new products a year are to be marked as successful. It's a cutthroat side of business.

Oddly enough, we have noticed that many organizations try to force innovation. Putting a team in a room, providing them with pizza, and shouting at them to innovate is not going to cut it if they are still fearing repercussions. Organizations spend staggering amounts on research & development, sales, and marketing of a new product, but this doesn’t equate to innovation, or value in general. If a sense of fear is harvested amongst developers, chances are that the product misses its target.

This presentation will provide a solid understanding of innovation, and psychological safety, mixed with our consulting experience at large organizations that try to innovate. Attendees will be able to reflect on their own levels of psychological safety and first steps to start moving the needle for the better.

5 Traits to Elevate Leadership in Complexity

Leadership in complex domains is vastly different from what many traditional organizations are used to. Technology is changing faster than organizations can keep up with, and with that complexity increases. Then the challenge arises: how do we keep aligned throughout all levels, keep innovating, and stay relevant as a company? Through proper leadership!

We've seen it happen over and over in our consulting gigs, all over the world: teams need to become Agile, while the environment around them lag behind. Friction and tension rise, exposing the organization to all kinds of risk. The term ‘leadership’ is often unjustly equated with ‘management’, and let's get that out of the way: those two terms are not the same. Then what makes leadership that important and different, and what makes it so important to navigate complexity?

This presentation will provide a solid understanding of the necessity of understanding leadership and applying it on all levels throughout the organization. Attendees will be able to reflect on their own levels of leadership and identify first steps to start moving the needle for the better.
