Troubleshooting in DevOps is like an MMORPG

Troubleshooting is a critical aspect of any DevOps workflow, and it can often feel like navigating a complex, unknown landscape. In many ways, troubleshooting in DevOps is similar to exploring a map in a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) without a tutorial. Both require a deep understanding of the systems and processes at play, a clear and efficient method of communication among team members, the ability to adapt to unexpected challenges, and rapidly learn/experiment with the system in a safe controlled way.

This session will discuss Sean’s experience at Progress Chef learning complex build systems, running on a hybrid infrastructure including modern and esoteric systems, not to mention the legacy/heritage code, decisions, and designs while keeping the lights on.

Through Sean’s experience, we will discuss approaches you can use to improve your understanding of the system, reduce end-user frustrations, experiment without breaking, and better support development workflows.

Join us while we have a fun conversation about real-world examples of troubleshooting crazy complex systems and how you can apply those technics to your DevOps process.

This is a joint presentation with Sean Simmons, a Principal DevOps Engineer at Progress Chef and George Westwater, Senior Director of Engineering at Progress Chef.
