Don’t Be Hans-Peter: The Coffee Machine Hack That Sparked GitOps Momentum
At Tchibo, we hade finally convinced management of GitOps and making it a priority project: We did this by showcasing the business value of Flux. But on the ground, things didn’t move. Developers resisted, feeling they didn’t need Flux.
We tried to engage with a tech talk featuring fictional characters: Hans-Peter (junior dev), On-Call Olaf (senior dev, regularly fixing Hans-Peter’s mess), Manuel Update (the dev who didn’t automate) and Feature-First Fiona (the PO with always more urgent features than GitOps).
This got the ball rolling. But what truly accelerated things among devs was a small act: we hacked a coffee machine with a new screensaver:
“Don’t be Hans-Peter - Use Flux.”
That little prank triggered corridor talks, smiles and a shift in perspective. Flux stopped being just another tech proposal and became a conversation starter.
Takeaway: Sometimes a small cultural nudge is effective to break through resistance in organizations driven by features, deadlines and habits.
