Beginning in 2008, Sophocles Zoullas spent nearly two decades on the Board of Directors and Members' Committee of the London P&I Club, and since 2010 he has been a member of the Lloyd's Register North American Advisory Committee, which he chaired for more than a decade. That governance work has run alongside his role as Founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Shipping, a privately held maritime investment and operating platform with interests across the tanker and dry bulk sectors.
Zoullas's long tenure with the London P&I Club and Lloyd's Register reflects the importance he places on institutional governance in shipping. He is also Director Emeritus of the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA), a role tied to his commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible maritime operations.
The same priorities have shaped the companies he has built. His leadership philosophy emphasizes transparent governance, rigorous risk management, and long-term capital stewardship, principles he has applied for more than three decades as a Greek-American industrialist, investor, and maritime executive working across global shipping, capital markets, and international maritime governance. His work sits at the intersection of global trade, energy logistics, industrial modernization, and long-term capital stewardship.
The pattern started early. From 1989 to 2005, Zoullas served as an executive officer and director of Norland Shipping & Trading Corporation, with responsibility for vessel acquisitions, financing, chartering, insurance, technical oversight, and operating-cost management. When the International Safety Management (ISM) Code was introduced across the industry in the late 1990s, he adopted it early, reasoning that institutional capital, lenders, and global charterers would come to expect transparent systems and disciplined operations.
He brought the same forward view to vessel technology. As the founding principal of Delphin Shipping, he built a fleet of new Ultramax and Supramax bulk carriers and was an early adopter of fuel-efficient design. With leading shipyards and classification societies, he oversaw the development and construction of a new generation of eco-design bulk carriers when fuel efficiency was only beginning to emerge as a significant driver of vessel economics and environmental performance. The program included the first fuel-saving bulk carrier delivered in China and led to what became the world's first fleet composed entirely of eco-design vessels, combining operating performance, capital efficiency, and environmental responsibility.
At Eagle Bulk Shipping Inc., which he founded in 2005 and led as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer until 2015, Zoullas paired growth with protection. He took the company public on Nasdaq within eight months of its formation in one of the earliest and most successful U.S. shipping IPOs of the modern era, expanded it to a 45-vessel fleet, and made it one of the world's most significant owners of Supramax dry bulk vessels. Along the way, he introduced one of the industry's first fleet-wide charter-default insurance programs.
Eagle Bulk's expansion rested on a substantial newbuilding and fleet-expansion program and on relationships across global shipbuilding, chartering, banking, and the public and private capital markets. That growth earned Eagle Bulk a place on Fortune Small Business's 2009 ranking of the 100 Fastest-Growing Small Public Companies in America.
Since founding Zenith Shipping in 2015, Zoullas has followed a long-term, cycle-driven investment strategy. He deployed significant capital during the 2015 to 2017 shipping downturn, acquiring assets at depressed valuations and building a diversified private fleet of crude tankers, product tankers, and dry bulk vessels. As a private owner, he can transact discreetly, maintain strategic flexibility, and build a fleet without signaling his intentions to the market, an approach reflected in a TradeWinds profile titled "Being a private shipowner means no one sees me coming."
Over his career, he has acquired and sold more than 100 commercial vessels, commissioned over 40 newbuildings in Japan and China, and raised billions of dollars across public and private capital markets through IPOs, secondary offerings, private equity, and structured debt financings. That work rests on long-standing commercial relationships across Japan, China, Korea, Europe, and the United States.
Zoullas's service extends well beyond shipping. A graduate of Harvard College with honors and a Harvard College Scholar, he earned an MBA from IMD in Lausanne, Switzerland. He has been involved as a mentor and on the Advisory Board of Harvard's Lemann Program on Creativity and Entrepreneurship, serves as Co-Chair of the Modern & Contemporary Art Committee at the Harvard Art Museums, and previously served on the Dean's Cabinet of the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. He is a Trustee of the Norton Museum of Art.
In New York, he served on the Board of The Episcopal School in the City of New York from 2002 to 2022, and he spent nearly two decades as an Advisory Board Member of NYC Parents in Action. He also co-produced Cradle of Champions, a documentary about New York's Golden Gloves amateur boxing tournament that was released on Showtime in 2018.
Edwin Gould Services for Children and Families named Zoullas its Person of the Year in recognition of his philanthropic work. He has also been honored as Man of the Year by the Hellenic-American Chamber of Commerce, received Marine Money's Annual Award, and been included in the TradeWinds Power 100 ranking of influential figures in international shipping.
The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Barron's, TradeWinds, and Marine Money have featured his perspectives on shipping and capital markets, and he has appeared on CNBC, Fox News, Jim Cramer, and Erin Burnett. He has delivered keynotes at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business Private Equity Conference and multiple Marine Money Ship Finance Forums. In 2026, at the Machina Summit in Paris, he gave a talk titled "The Next Industrial Supercycle: How Physical AI Will Transform the Global Industrial Complex," on the convergence of robotics, automation, and industrial infrastructure and its implications for supply chains, labor markets, and long-term capital deployment.
Sophocles Zoullas continues to lead Zenith Shipping while continuing his work on the Lloyd's Register North American Advisory Committee, keeping disciplined capital allocation, risk management, and long-term value creation at the center of his work.
