Isn't it time to ditch code coverage? Focus on high value tests instead

As engineers, it can be difficult to use metrics to measure the value of what we do. One metric that typically falls short is code coverage because it can’t measure how WELL our application has been tested, rather, it focuses how MUCH has been tested. What if we ditched this traditional metric and focused on what’s truly valuable instead?

In this talk, we will employ a testing strategy that provides higher value than traditional code coverage strategies. This strategy will center around a hyper focus of writing HIGH VALUE tests. These are tests that have longevity and build true confidence in the quality of your application. As a software or QA engineer, you will walk away with a greater understanding of when to employ different types of tests (unit, e2e, integration, etc.) so that they are providing high value rather than chasing code coverage.

ChatGPT! Don't take my job, help me thrive in it!

ChatGPT has been all the rage since the late months of 2022. People are constantly asking if it’s a threat to certain peoples' jobs and if it isn't yet, when will it be? With v4 right around the corner, this will only increase dramatically. There are always disruptors in play, some big and some small and ChatGPT is certainly one of the big ones. Instead of fearing it, how can we embrace it and leverage it to help us do even better at our own software engineering related roles?

In this session, we will explore very practical uses of ChatGPT within the every day work we do. Are you a software engineer? Cloud? QA? Data? No matter what type, ChatGPT can undoubtedly provide great lift. We will talk about what problems it is good at solving and what tasks it is good at executing. Opposite of that, we will also explore what ChatGPT isn't very good at and learn how to adapt our inputs to its weaknesses to get optimal results and not waste our time in the areas it does not yet excel.

As any type of engineer in the software space, you will walk away with several use cases that can help you do your job more efficiently and sometimes even better. These use cases will be the foundation in which you can discover even more uses through experimentation to help you be great at your role.
