Do I have to go to school? Why non-technical learning is important for everyone

“Awww, do I have to go to school??” A refrain repeated in households everywhere. Parents, so numb to the question as to consider it rhetorical, do not bother to answer with their inevitable “Yes.”

But why?

Kids are naturally attracted to the newest, flashiest games, the streaming videos their friends are giggling at, the morning news telling viewers to learn to code for a great job someday interspersed with advertisements for the fastest internet; the best tech-driven healthcare; the greatest possible life available along the single path of technology.

Technology, however, has a foundation. Reading, writing, mathematics, history, culture studies, music, art. Without these, technology loses context (read “value”) and people lose focus.

Children need to learn widely, gain the skills and knowledge that may, one day, underpin truly value-adding technology whether that be really cool games and movies, or apps and artificial intelligence. For this same reason, adults are not exempt from the need for a broad spectrum of knowledge. It is the quality of one’s ideas and their ability to put those ideas into the written word that most heavily influence future success.

Join this mother daughter duo as they dive into why it is important to know more than just technology.

The Human Side to Testing

We’re known for breaking things and testing the limits, and patience, of our team and our systems. We advocate for quality in all things and we advocate for the end user. But, none of us actually think about how our varied backgrounds influence what we do and how we test. In this session we’ll explore how our previous (and current) experiences subconsciously affect our testing and how to bring those experiences to the forefront in order to be better testers all around.

A Dev's Guide to Demoing

No matter where you are, at some point your work is going to have to be demonstrated to other people. Instead of having your BA or QA or even PO demo it, wouldn't it be easier to just demo it yourself? But, having to present in front of people is a little scary. Indeed it is but there are some tips and tricks that you could learn to very easily put into practice to help you be able to eliminate that fear and be a demoing machine.

In this session, we are going to go over the basics on how to run a good demo. Tips and tricks on what to show and how to show off what you've done, and even some hints as to how to run a demo in different ways depending on your audience.

It's never going to be easy to give a demo but with a few tips and tricks, we can work on making any demo more successful
