Shift Left on Developer Runtimes

Teams of all sizes have shifted left with DevOps, PlatformOps, and CI/CD, but what about developers’ primary responsibility? Writing code. We are still building work-alikes for everything from legacy environments to microservice architectures on our laptops. Things like declarative tooling help, but it can still take weeks before a first commit, and each environment is subject to patching, maintenance and governance issues.

The FAANGs have been using Cloud Development Environments for years to accelerate onboarding, deploy consistent tooling and eliminate individually maintained development environments. That technology is now available in many forms, from SaaS pay-as-you-go offerings, all the way up to self-hosted, self-maintained 100% offline platforms at the highest security shops.

Attendees will learn about the current state of Cloud Development Environments and see how to leverage a platform to create and use atomic workspaces to eliminate wasted cycles and keep Developers in Flow.

Cloud Development Environments Are Strategic Assets

Many organizations have embraced the cloud for deploying software, but they still rely on local machines for development. Isn’t it time to bring development into the cloud too? Many are still building work-alikes on their laptops, or using shadow IT when local resources become a constraint. Deploying a Cloud Development Environment (CDE) that is secure, stable, scalable, and loved by developers is no longer a luxury—it's a necessity. This talk presents the process behind deploying a robust CDE that becomes a competitive advantage for your organization.

Attendees will learn how to leverage cloud-native technologies to build scalable CDEs that maintain both performance and developer experience. This talk will focus on:
- Key characteristics of an effective CDE: Automation, self-service, resource efficiency, and flexibility—ensuring resilience and adaptability for a growing organization.
- Beyond the technology: Measuring and improving developer experience at scale, justifying costs, fostering cross-functional collaboration, planning migrations, and securing executive sponsorship.
- Practical insights for long-term impact: Incremental steps to transform a CDE into a strategic asset—accelerating innovation, reducing time-to-market, and promoting continuous improvement.
Whether you’re an engineering manager, DevOps professional, or CTO, this session will empower you with the knowledge to deploy a CDE that evolves into a strategic advantage for your organization.

Accelerate cloud native development with Coder

Need a self-hosted, fully supported Cloud Development Environment that runs on pretty much any architecture? Check out Coder! Shift left on your developer runtimes while retaining control of your IP and infrastructure — without investing in a from-scratch Platform Engineering build out. In this hands-on workshop the Coder team demonstrates how to deploy, manage, and use Coder in a flexible and secure environment . Participants will learn how to self-host their CDE with Coder and keep developers in flow.
