Tim Szigeti is a Principal Engineer and the Director of Technical Marketing for Cisco’s Emerging Technologies & Incubation (ET&I) group, which is Cisco's leading-edge Research & Development team. In this role he serves to drive innovative technology solutions to solve top-of-mind business problems, the kind of problems that keep customers up at night: which if solved, lead to promotions, and if remain unsolved, lead to firings. Tim is involved in all phases of technology innovation, from ideation, to prototyping, to market validation, to iteration and maturing to ultimately transitioning the project to a business unit as a shipping product to drive revenue growth. In his 22 years with Cisco, Tim has been issued 7 US patents, authored four Cisco Press books and an IETF standard (RFC 8325). Additionally, Tim has been inducted into Cisco’s Distinguished Speaker Hall of Fame Elite, representing the Top 1 percent of Cisco speakers of all time. Outside of Cisco, Tim’s passion is on-track performance driving; as such, you may at times catch a glimpse of him taking corners at high speeds on the spectacular Sea-to-Sky Highway between his hometown of Vancouver and Whistler, British Columbia. Additional information on Tim can be found on the Cisco Innovators website in the feature story “Cisco Innovators: Tim Szigeti,” at https://newsroom.cisco.com/feature-content?type=webcontent&articleId=1845902.

Reimagining Application Networking and Security
Businesses are increasingly shifting their applications to microservice based architectures, as these support rapid application development with flexibility, stability, portability, and scale. However, microservice architectures present new networking and security challenges that traditional approaches simply cannot meet. For instance, securely interconnecting such microservices dynamically and at scale cannot be done with legacy systems and requires and entirely new approach, a Cloud Native approach. Similarly too when it comes to security, it's not enough to secure an interconnection, but also containers, pods, clusters and even APIs. This requires security to be embedded early and pervasively into the entire CI/CD pipeline, and not simply as an after-the-fact consideration. In this session we’ll lay out some of the key problem areas, industry best practices and demonstrate solutions to meet these new and complex requirements.
