Tom Walter is a Division I baseball coach and social impact leader with over 900 career wins earned across George Washington, New Orleans, and Wake Forest. His coaching philosophy centers on academic achievement, community service, and long-term growth and development. Every player he has coached has graduated and contributed to service initiatives. His leadership at Wake Forest led the team to national success, including a No. 1 ranking and multiple NCAA tournament appearances.
Tom was born in New York and raised in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. His values were shaped during his time at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. There, he served as team captain in his junior and senior years, earned Big East All-Academic honors in 1990 and 1991, and was named team MVP in his final season. He also received recognition as freshman of the year at the start of his college career.
Following his undergraduate degree in finance, Tom began his MBA at George Washington University. During this time, he tutored athletes in calculus, managed athletic equipment, and worked as an assistant coach. That season, the team captured the Atlantic 10 championship and secured a place in the 1992 NCAA tournament.
In 1996, Tom became head coach at George Washington University. Over eight seasons, he achieved a 273–181 record, making him the winningest coach in the program’s history. In 2002, the team reached the NCAA tournament, and he was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year. His program produced 26 professional players, including one who reached the Major Leagues. He was inducted into the GW Athletics Hall of Fame in 2019 and is also a member of the AAABA and Cambria County Halls of Fame.
At Wake Forest, he continued building on his record while also launching Get In the Game in 2020, a nonprofit focused on youth leadership and service. The initiative has engaged around 1,500 high school students and received national recognition. Thomas Walter remains committed to service, education, and athletic excellence as he approaches the milestone of 1,000 career wins.
