Tsitsi Matekaire is a human rights lawyer, currently serving as the Global Lead, End Sexual Exploitation at Equality Now. In this role, Tsitsi provides leadership to a global team campaigning to end sexual exploitation in physical and digital spaces worldwide. She is also part of the core team and coordinating committee of the Alliance for Universal Digital Rights, a global network promoting a feminist intersectional approach to universal digital rights and digital governance, co-founded by Equality Now and Women Leading in AI. In 2023, she was named one of the top 100 Women in AI Ethics.
Tsitsi is a recognized legal expert on women’s rights, sexual exploitation, access to justice, women’s political participation, and violence against women and girls. She is co-author of “How Lifelong Discrimination and Legal Inequality Facilitate Sex Trafficking in Women and Girls,” featured in the Palgrave International Handbook on Human Trafficking (2019), and of Equality Now’s Report, Ending Online Sexual Exploitation And Abuse Of Women And Girls: A Call For International Standards, 2022. She has also led Equality Now’s team that has produced recent reports on the laws relating to doxing and deep-fake image-based sexual abuse across 10 jurisdictions. She speaks at many international conferences on digital rights, including the recent Global Dialogue on Technology hosted by UNFPA and the governments of the Bahamas and Luxembourg on the sidelines of ICPD30. The London Economic, Eco-Business, and Inter Press Service have featured her writing and commentary.
Tsitsi began her career as a Legal Officer at Women’s Action Group in Zimbabwe, providing legal aid and counseling support to women affected by domestic violence. She was also Director of the Women in Politics Support Unit in Zimbabwe and a Program Manager at Womankind Worldwide in the UK. Tsitsi is a Chevening Scholar and obtained a Master of Laws in Human Rights Law from the University of Nottingham in the UK. She enjoys listening to and working with women’s groups and those with lived experience to identify solutions that will bring about the most impact; knowing that she is contributing to positive changes in women’s lives has been her greatest inspiration throughout her career.
