I'm a founding partner at Initial Capacity, a software consultancy of lead developers building applications at scale for startups and the world's largest companies. I also teach a course on the Foundations of Software Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder.
Prior to Initial Capacity, I spent eight years with Pivotal Labs (acquired by VMware in 2020) building software for customers ranging from early stage startups to industry leading enterprises. I worked with customers to ship production software, build engineering teams, and enhance developer capabilities. I helped to build the award-winning Platform Acceleration Lab and to start the Pivotal Labs Dublin office.
My PhD in mathematics shapes how I think about evaluation and correctness in software. Currently building AI systems, writing Go, Python, Kotlin, and Typescript.

Topics
Private Global AI Tech Summit
Delivered an AI Evaluations talk to an audience of 100s of engineers at a private event
AI applications have enormous potential to transform the way we interact with technology. However, their unpredictability means we need robust methods to ensure AI-powered applications function correctly in production.
Private Global Architecture Tech Summit
Delivered "The Unit in Unit testing" to an audience of 100s of engineers.
Most unit test suites rely heavily on mocks, but mocks can mask real failures and create brittle tests. This talk explored using fake objects to improve test confidence, documentation, and decoupling.
Boulder Startup Week
Negotiating with OpenAI
What happens when you let an LLM negotiate for you? This talk walked through building an LLM-powered negotiation app with Flask and web components.
Colorado AI Builders
Data Collector Architectures in AI
RAG apps are all the rage, but developers tend to overcomplicate their architecture, resulting in brittle systems. We apply a tried-and-true architecture to RAG to improve outcomes and increase reliability.
Private Architecture Conference
Delivered a talk entitled "Big App Architecture" for a private audience.
This talk outlines how my team and I built a contact tracing application for a government health agency. By keeping the architecture simple, we were able to handle a sustained rate of 1,500 user registrations per second.
