Integrating CGMES-Based Grid Models Using the Generic Branch in Power Grid Model

The Common Grid Model Exchange Specification (CGMES) is becoming the de facto standard for exchanging grid models across utilities and TSOs. However, integrating CGMES-based data into simulation and analysis tools remains a challenge due to differences in internal representations.

This talk introduces a practical, open-source solution implemented in the Power Grid Model (PGM) framework: the Generic Branch. Developed and contributed by the speaker, the Generic Branch allows for the direct use of CGMES electrical equivalents (e.g., series impedance and shunt admittance) without the need for conversion to manufacturer-style transformer data.

To support this workflow, we at SOPTIM AG developed the CGMES2PGM Converter, an open-source tool that transforms CIM/CGMES datasets into PGM format using the Generic Branch as a core element ([github.com/SOPTIM/cgmes2pgm\_converter](https://github.com/SOPTIM/cgmes2pgm_converter)).

The session includes key design insights, practical use cases, and a short live demo showcasing how CGMES-based models can be used directly in PGM for grid analysis.
