Diet Docker: Crafting lightweight containers with multi-stage builds

Building containerized applications should not mean bloated images and unnecessary dependencies. Modern software demands fast developer experience and fast deployments, but oversized images can slow down your builds at the critical moments of development and deployment. Multi-stage builds with Docker are a powerful method for streamlining your workflows.

In this session, we will break down how to craft an efficient multi-stage Dockerfile tailored for a fast inner loop and secure production image. We will compile, test, and publish our .NET application within a single Dockerfile while ensuring the final image contains only essential artifacts for production. You’ll learn the basics of Dockerfiles, how to utilize stages, optimize caching, and refine build layers to keep your Docker builds fast. Whether you are looking to accelerate your inner loop, improve application security, or better understand containers, you’ll leave equipped with essential knowledge and practices for cloud-native development.

Cloud Terraformation: From ClickOps to infrastructure as code

Is your cloud environment a warm and inviting habitat or a fragile ecosystem everyone is afraid to touch? The migration to the cloud rarely starts with best practices. Every company has shameful infrastructure that was manually configured. However, at some point we decide our infrastructure needs planetary-level alteration. Whether it is for engineering a consistent platform for deploying applications or to preserve desired state and prevent drift, we say we’re going to start the conversion soon. We want that infrastructure as code (IaC) terraformation.

In this session, we will explore Terraform, a declarative language for IaC. Join us as we terraform a production application in Azure from existing ClickOps resources to codified infrastructure. We’ll go through the process of exporting resources and refactoring the result for future administration. We might even break production as we test our new code.

Whether you are new to the cloud or a DevOps expert, you will chart your course from this demonstration with a clear trajectory towards your infrastructure as code journey.

Hello Aspire: The local friendly, cloud ready orchestrator

Building modern applications is complex. Running your entire application involves multiple components—a frontend, backend, and database at least—and each requires its own way to start them, and configuration so they all communicate is a nightmare in the cloud and locally. Hello Aspire, the latest framework in the .NET ecosystem. It is an orchestrator for your application stack that is local development friendly, but also ready for cloud-native production. With Aspire, building modern distributed applications no longer requires us to sacrifice the local developer experience.

In this session, we will cover the key features that Aspire brings to our application. A sample codebase will be used to demonstrate the features live. To begin, we will start our application with a single command and review the Aspire dashboard including resource graph and telemetry available. Next, we will review modeling our application in C# and the opinionated service defaults added to our solution. Finally, we’ll see new test automation possibilities thanks to Aspire.

Regardless of previous .NET experience, attendees of this session will leave with a clear understanding of what Aspire offers and how to start integrating it into their existing applications.

AI for Dummies: Building AI-powered apps without the data science degree

This session will show how AI-as-a-service can meaningfully enhance applications with offerings from image recognition to speech synthesis and generative AI prompting. You'll see that even without expertise, you can easily integrate AI, with a twist of humor and a touch of playful mockery.

Our talk will emphasize the simplicity and accessibility of Azure AI services within a .NET application, demonstrating that you don't need to be a data scientist to leverage the power of artificial intelligence. We’ll start off with a brief demonstration using a custom “Mocking Mirror” application to roast the presenter. Then we’ll review our mocking mirror application code and cloud environment to understand how vision, speech, and generative AI services are implemented and connected. We'll walk through the development process, share valuable insights, and present key lessons learned, including how quickly and easily you can get started with Azure AI and build applications that harness the latest in AI technology.

This session aims to inspire and equip participants of all skill levels and backgrounds with the knowledge necessary to develop their own innovative AI-powered applications. Whether you are new to AI or seeking to expand your expertise, this session will provide practical tips and a hands-on overview to fuel your creative projects.

The DevOops Handbook: A satirical guide to slow software delivery

In the quest for rapid software delivery, DevOps principles are misapplied or skipped entirely, leading to a “DevOops culture.” In this talk we'll explore DevOps missteps through a satirical narrative where missteps and bad practices are presented as the path forward.

To start, we’ll discuss deploying code the way of the masochist. This will include a convincing argument for detail-oriented change requests and late-night deployments to prevent any witnesses to our misdeeds. Following this, we will outline our project mismanagement philosophy for maintaining constant chaos: embracing siloes and eliminating feedback loops. Finally, we'll present why quality assurance is overrated and unnecessary. Instead, we'll present the benefits of zero testing and disabling quality and security tools – they are just like that “check engine” light in the car: useless and annoying.

Together we’ll see how easy it is to establish the worst DevOps culture for modern software delivery: a DevOops culture!

Or not. While this talk is tongue in cheek, we will see how to overcome these all-to-real mindsets. By the time we are done, we'll have navigated the treacherous waters of software misadventures with a wink and a smile so we can march forward, turning our ‘oopses’ into opportunities and our code catastrophes into triumphs.
