Facilitation Fitness: Get Your Collaboration in Shape
Our organizations, technologies, and solutions are facing more change and complexity than ever before. Solving these complex problems requires creativity and teamwork, and teams need support and guidance to maximize their interactions. But if we want to stay in top form, we have to exercise these skills.
What shape do these collaborative conversations take? What approaches and techniques do we need to strengthen? Through workouts (activities) and discussion in this session, we flex our skills and practice ways to guide these discussions through the necessary stages to reach a valuable conclusion.
You'll experience the Liberating Structure 1-2-4-All as we explore a topic, we'll narrow down options using the 35 Game, and we'll discuss many other facilitation techniques you can explore.
Let's get our facilitation in shape!
Awareness to Act: Unlock Your Influence
As Agilists, we strive to help people and teams improve their effectiveness and interactions but we often find ourselves without objective data, jumping to conclusions and operating out of assumptions. Blinded by our own perspectives, we end up using ineffective approaches to address the least impactful issues. Ultimately, our efforts do not resonate, the mindsets of those around us do not shift, and we are left wondering why our impact isn't bigger.
Whether you're trying to figure out how to help your team improve, just starting with a new team, or mentoring a Scrum Master, the keys to unlocking your influence are increased awareness, unbiased analysis, and intentional action. We will learn about and apply the Awareness to Act Canvas and the set of skills it prompts you to use, pausing your own viewpoints, slowing down your thinking, and broadening your awareness. You'll be able to build a backlog of targeted, impactful actions, and then use the canvas to see the impact on the team's performance. With some focused and intentional effort, you can increase your awareness to enlarge your influence.
Learning Outcomes
• Identify challenges you face with awareness and how they affect your influence
• Learn how to separate observation from analysis
• Practice turning awareness and analysis into a backlog of focused actions
Currently targeted to Scrum Masters and Agile Coaches. I am working to broaden the content to be applicable in other contexts.
Improving Outcomes with Evidence-Based Management
We strive to make good decisions as we work to deliver amid change and uncertainty. Still, it's easy to lose sight of the deeper goals - improving outcomes, reducing risks, and optimizing investments. What should we measure? Are our goals still valid? Are we still headed in the right direction? And, how can we do this at the organizational level?
Through a set of interactive exercises, you learn about the elements of Evidence-Based Management (EBM) and how they improve decision-making in complex situations. Using discussion and the online whiteboard tool Mural, Mark guides your discovery of EBM and its value to you.
In this session, you:
- Learn four Key Value Areas (KVAs) and the balance needed for sustained success
- Explore how empirical loops can be applied to strategic goals
- Re-frame measures as empirical evidence that enables deeper questions for better decisions
Come learn how to make better decisions and continuously improve toward strategic goals and objectives.
Can be delivered in-person or virtually (using Mural).
