Room to Heal: An Introduction to Trauma-Informed Care for Fathers

Trauma-informed care (TIC) is a crucial component in mental health, addiction, justice system, child welfare environments, and many others. However, it is still a concept that needs a clear definition, differentiation between different groups based on specific needs (e.g., gender, race, ethnicity, etc.), and intentional practice and implementation by practitioners or anyone who works in the above-mentioned areas. This session aims to discuss the essential concepts of TIC, making it a compelling practice to help others and will specifically describe ways TIC can be applied to working with fathers. The session will address the following learning objectives:

1. Define trauma-informed care and how the needs of those you serve may differ based on gender, race, ethnicity, and other characteristics.

2. Identify ways in which standard socialization of boys is often traumatic in itself and can create barriers to healthy fatherhood.

3. Identify specific ways in which you, as a provider, can become more trauma-informed while working with fathers.

Helping Fathers Heal: Trauma-informed care for organizations

Professionals and individuals who work with fathers are beginning to recognize the importance of adopting a trauma-informed approach to their work. This approach, also known as TIC, is part of a larger framework called values-based services (VBS). When an organization integrates VBS into its core approach, it leads to improved outcomes for the fathers they serve. However, TIC is not always fully recognized or understood by organizations, which can result in missed opportunities to improve experiences for fathers, employees and the organization as a whole.

In this session, we will discuss how to define values-based services, what trauma-informed care means from a whole-organizational approach, and how organizations commonly miss out on being trauma-informed for the fathers they serve. We will also explore specific ways in which you, as a provider, can use this information to help your organization become more trauma-informed for the fathers you work with.

Not Just Mr. Fix-It: Understanding Fathers through a Trauma Lens

Trauma-informed care (TIC) is recognized as a critical component of working within mental health, addiction, the justice system, and child welfare environments (among many others). This session will discuss the overarching concepts of TIC that make this practice a compelling way to help others. Participants are then introduced to how and why men’s needs within TIC are different and offered tools and techniques for engaging fathers through a trauma-informed approach. This session will also explore the importance of applying TIC principles in the services we provide to fathers. We also offer some easy to implement practices that attendees can leave with.

Anyone who works with fathers, in any capacity, will leave having a better understanding of the critical principles of trauma-informed care, how to apply them to working with fathers, and examples of tools and techniques they can use.

Beyond the Grill: Practical Trauma-Informed Skills

What the heck can I do to be more trauma-informed with the fathers I serve? If you find yourself asking this question, then this session is for you! As an attendee, you will participate in a foundational activity for helping men and dads explore the Man Rules – the rules and assumptions that young boys and men are taught about masculinity. You will learn the importance of enacting a TIC approach to any activities or exercises you facilitate with the fathers with whom you work to help promote a sense of safety and increase engagement. You will leave the session having had an opportunity to practice and learn exercises from the first trauma-informed curriculum for fathers, Amazing Dads!

We focus on healing men’s pain through helping them connect to the influences of their pasts and make conscious choices to enact positive changes in their lives. The tools we present in this workshop will allow participants to help fathers reflect on their upbringing, how they are showing up as fathers currently, and look to the future to build visions of the dads they truly want to be.
