Mischief Managed using Design Tokens 🧙
Consistency is hard, maintenance is even harder. Svipper is part of Norway’s mobility partnership (OMS) is a national collaboration between a dozen parties to unify the public transport experience through shared digital services. Distributed teams contribute to this open-source initiative. We were faced with the challenge of integrating with a modular and highly themeable design system for both white-label and internal apps.
Recently, we revamped our design system and explored ways of propagating design updates throughout our entire product portfolio, across different stacks. We aim to inspire others by sharing the pitfalls and best practices we have discovered during this journey. The audience is guided through our process by sharing clear examples from our products throughout our rebranding from Troms Fylkestrafikk to Svipper.
We set up an architecture of design tokens that are used in our designs in Figma (using Figma Variables) and directly linked to their counterparts in internally managed component libraries by leveraging TypeScript and CSS variables.
Product development has improved noticeably: maintenance of the design system and accessibility tweaks are now only a version-bump away. The separation between design choices and component implementations also enables the implementation of different color palettes such as dark mode and organizational themes. We will show how to use this concept to maintain the design system and see the changes apply instantly across our applications.
We believe these experiences can truly benefit others in their design system journeys.
From clueless to queueless ⛴️
Have you ever wondered why you are listening 20 minutes to distorted elevator jazz just to ask a question to your insurance company? Me neither! That is just the way things are. But challenge the obvious, and innovation takes place. At Troms Fylkeskommune, we realized that waiting hours in line for a ferry is a huge waste of time. Therefore, we are reimagining the ferry journey at the crossroads of tech, design, and mobility.
Tourism in Northern Norway has exploded over the last decade, with all the challenges that come with it. The first come, first served principle for ferry queues does not scale to this magnitude, with wait times spanning across multiple days. This was our starting point.
Through an interdisciplinary design thinking process involving locals, tourist, crew, and domain experts, we aim to eliminate ferry queues in the county.
In this session, we pull back the curtain on our innovation process and show you the tech driving it. We will walk you through real-world results from our peak-season pilot, and you get to walk away with a kickass strategy for bringing bold ideas to life.
