I am the founder of The Knoxville Happiness Coalition where we offer coaching, management consultation, and training for individuals and organizations. I teach personal & professional development courses for The University of Tennessee Center for Professional Education and Lifelong Learning. My courses on the Learn Formula platform offer continuing education credits. I am a certificate holder of The Fellowship, the world’s preeminent organizational culture masterclass.

From 2020 to 2022, I served on the board of the Oak Ridge Human Resources Association and played a pivotal role in merging it with the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce, creating the Oak Ridge Human Resources Alliance. Since then, I have been active on the advisory committee, helping shape the future of HR practices in our community.

I also served as President of the Board for The Knoxville Association of Women Executives, with 4 years on the Board, leading projects to amend by-laws, support a scholarship to a local university student, and acknowledge a notable woman in our community. I am also a mentor with UT Promise, and a Community Champion on the Udemy teaching platform. My talks have been featured with World Happiness Fest as I’ve been part of the community since its inception.

My expertise comes from a Masters degree in Counseling, Bachelor degree in Social Work, Certification to teach the Bible from Rhema Bible College & recent certification in Leadership & Management from Wharton Executive Education. I have 30+ years experience with well-being initiatives, and am a retired Mental Health Therapist.

My parents were immigrants to the United States from Cyprus, as my late father was a biophysicist, invited to the USA and subsequent Professor Emeritus of the University of Tennessee. In 1974, Turkey invaded the island, resulting in all my extended family fleeing their homes. Even though my parents were in the USA, they lost orchards, farms, a movie theater and a house. We did not visit Cyprus until 1979, as it took that long for my relatives to resettle in the southern part of the island. I was raised with a strong work ethic and gratitude for life with innate happiness, and have carried this virtue throughout my career.

Communicating Like a Champion

Communication can be tough, especially when we’re navigating conflict, addressing bad behavior, or setting boundaries. These conversations are the ones we often dread, but they’re the ones that matter most.

Objectives:

The first step to communicating like a champion is to walk into every conversation with a clear purpose. If you don’t know exactly what you want to achieve, how can you guide the conversation effectively? Champions never go into a situation blind.

One of the biggest challenges in conflict is that we often listen to respond, not to understand. This creates a cycle of defensiveness where nothing gets resolved. Champions know that listening with empathy is the key to breaking down barriers and reaching solutions.

The final objective is setting clear, respectful boundaries and following through with accountability. Champions don’t avoid tough conversations. They address them head-on, not just to express their needs but to protect their time, energy, and values.

Psychological safety and trust, why it matters, and how to build it

A lack of psychological safety can quietly undermine even the most talented teams. Imagine a situation where employees hesitate to ask questions, suggest new ideas, or admit mistakes. In such environments, teams experience stalled innovation, poor decision-making, and reduced performance.

Without a sense of psychological safety, fear of judgment or retaliation prevents team members from fully contributing, resulting in disengagement, siloed thinking, and missed opportunities for growth.

Real-world examples:
* Medical errors in healthcare settings often go unreported due to fear of blame, leading to avoidable harm.
* Tech companies with brilliant engineers fail to innovate because junior staff are afraid to challenge senior leadership.
* Corporate teams become stagnant, unable to adapt to changing markets, because members are too afraid to voice new ideas or concerns.

Objectives:

Learners will be able to define psychological safety and explain its significance.

Learners will be able to identify and describe the key elements of a psychologically safe environment.

Learners will be able to differentiate between signs of a psychologically safe and unsafe team environment.
