Post-Modern CSS: In-depth on Grid, Flexbox and other new paradigm of CSS

CSS has changed. It’s moving away from the mired mess of its origin and toward a bright future of interesting layout and easy design.

If you’ve been focused on other important skills in the past 5 years, you’ve missed out on a lot of new, helpful techniques.

This talk will cover the history of CSS and then will go into a deep dive into Flexbox, CSS Grid, CSS shapes, blend-modes, new length units and more with practical examples and tutorials of each.

This is targeted toward developers and designers who have grown dependent on Bootstrap and Foundation for their CSS knowledge. It’s time to come back into the fold and reclaim the third leg of the basic Web tripod!

Join the CSS Future with CSS Grid

Streamline your layout work with the new hotness from the actual CSS specification: CSS Grid Layout. In this talk, we'll cover the basics of getting started with Grid, why and when to use Grid, advanced techniques such as Named Grid Lines, and how we can utilize this advancement to create new and unexpected web layouts.

Practical Grid: Get Started with CSS Grid in Practical, Reusable Components

CSS Grid is taking the design and front-end world by storm. If you’re new to Grid, however, all of the new syntax may make it feel like a closed technology. What’s the difference between grid-template-rows, grid-auto-rows, grid-template-areas, implicit and explicit grids? Where did those “/”s come from? What if I have to support Internet Explorer?

In this workshop, we’ll cover all the basics and advanced maneuvers of Grid in practical, reusable components that build on each other. After two and a half hours with me, you’ll be writing Grid code in your sleep, all while building a sound foundation of practical reusable components that you can implement in any front-end project that comes your way.

Static is the New Dynamic

Are you tired of managing a server for all your minor needs? Do you wish DevOps was handled for you so that you could get right down to creating the next great feature? Do you worry about your database security? Do you wish you didn’t even HAVE a database? Static Sites and “Serverless” architecture may be for you.

In this talk, we’ll discuss the amazing advancements in hosting and Functions as a Service that have made static sites all the rage again. I’ll walk you through the benefits and drawbacks of this methodology as well as get you up and running with some unique examples of bringing dynamic functionality to your static sites via “serverless” functions.

The New CSS: Learn to Love Styles

Contrary to popular belief, CSS is an absolute delight.

Many developers I talk to think the phrase “Modern CSS” is an oxymoron. If you haven’t been watching the growth and maturity of CSS in the past 5 years, you’re doing yourself a disservice.

In this workshop, we’ll delve into what makes modern CSS truly great.

New CSS Layout makes complex designs a snap with Flex and Grid. Amazing graphical manipulation is possible with very few lines of code. CSS Custom Properties (aka CSS Variables) clean your code and make it much more reusable. Worried about old browser support? We’ll cover “Support-first CSS” with @support queries and a new mindset.

You’ll come away from this workshop with a whole new appreciation for CSS as well as many new patterns and efficiencies that you can implement right away!

You're a Designer; I Promise

Too many developers think they can never learn to design. While it may be true that you’ll never be a master graphic artist, there are tons of tips and tricks to make sure your application or website looks professionally designed.

In this talk, we’ll cover the basics of good design, view examples of both good and bad design and discuss how to incorporate design thinking into your development process. Attendees will walk away with practical knowledge to start applying to current and future projects.

Bring Punk Rock Back to Web Design

The punk rock scene of the 70s and 80s pushed the design world forward in ways that could only have come from a non-conformist movement. Flyers, ‘zines and album art were challenging, complex, sometimes hideous and always artistic.

In the realm of rectangles that has been the modern web, we haven't had much chance to play in this style. We could very easily blame this on the technology. Up until a few years ago, many of the challenging layouts were so difficult on the web that it wasn’t worth pursuing. With a whole host of new CSS and JavaScript, many things that used to be impossible are easy. So where are the new and challenging designs?

We’ve fallen in love with clean, crisp designs and lost sight of challenging our users with unique and creative design work. We seek inspiration for web design FROM web design. How can we break our industry out of this rut?

The Joys of JAMstack Cooking

Bon Appétit, developers!

If you’ve been curious about the JAMstack (JavaScript, APIs and Markup) movement, this talk will catch you up to speed with delicious recipes to make the perfect JAMstack stack for you or your business.

We’ll explore all the ingredients that make a JAMstack site go (various services, codebases and frameworks) as well as multiple techniques you can use to combine them in new and unexpected ways.

Attendees will walk away with multiple new design patterns, technologies and services they need to make amazingly performant, secure and statically dynamic sites.
