Your First Node.js Contribution

Have you ever wanted to contribute to a foundational open source project like Node.js? Maybe you don’t know where to start. Maybe you always assumed that was work reserved for “someone else.” Join experienced contributors who will guide you through your first (or second or third or fourth) commit to the Node.js core. They will be available to help troubleshoot any development environment issues and also to provide guided tours through specific areas of the Node.js core source code. Contributors of all skill levels and experiences are welcome (not every contribution has to be a code change). Come and make your first Node.js core contribution!

Modern Web APIs and Too Much of a Good Thing

jQuery undeniably powers the web… Today, over 82 million websites use jQuery. jQuery changed the way developers built web applications and played a crucial role in JavaScript’s world domination.

This talk reveals some of the startling statistics and analysis of the impact jQuery has on today’s internet and the history of what made this library the powerhouse of the web.

In 2024, new frameworks, such as react, have taken over web development, but jQuery still lives on. Are there security risks? What would a world look like without jQuery? Are there modern alternatives and web standards to this library? What would be the reasons to switch to them and how? Is it possible to have too much of a good thing?

Imagine a future where the world relies less on this fundamental building block and why we might want to work towards that future.

Building a Modern Decentralized Mobile App

With the advancement of portable devices and modern web APIs, it is now possible to create web applications that can scan and render QR codes directly from the browser. What kind of applications are possible if communications no longer require API calls? Imagine a world where two applications can communicate directly when in physical view of each other. No platform lock-in, proprietary APIs, or application downloads required. With modern PWA standards, all of this can also be nicely packaged into a dedicated app directly from the browser.

This talk explores the possibilities of creating message-less applications that communicate via QR codes. The talk describes the adventure around creating an app using QR code communication for a local business. Taking something as simple as QR codes to replace API heavy applications that can work both online and offline using modern web technologies, javascript, and open-source. Of course, a live demo is included!

IPFS - The Practical Bits

What if applications could scale infinitely from a distributed, decentralized web? The InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) has the potential to be the future of a decentralized web. Immutable, content addressable storage, distributed hash tables, and no blockchain. New open-source projects, such as Elastic-IPFS, run IPFS nodes in the cloud to allow theoretically infinite scalability while also allowing existing applications to benefit from IPFS.

During this talk, attendees will learn what IPFS is and how we can use the practical bits of this web 3.0 technology to improve our applications today. You will also learn some of the hype and what IPFS and web 3.0 is not. The talk will also present the exciting possibilities with IPFS and how attendees can get involved and start adding decentralized functionality to their applications today. Learn what is possible with immutable, content addressable storage.

Take an adventure into learning about IPFS! This is web 3.0, without the hype.

Design Tokens, Systems, and a Component’s Journey From Design to Deployment

Design systems reduce design inconsistencies, eliminate process bottlenecks, and allow teams and organizations to scale. A design system of systems is a platform that allows an organization to provide the same advantages across multiple platforms, channels, and even brands. Too often it can feel like designers and developers work in different worlds and speak different languages. These challenges are compounded multiple times when working with multiple user-facing interfaces across platforms, channels, or brands. We built a design system of systems using JS allowing all teams to stay on brand on all platforms and projects. This included a cross-brand and cross-platform components library for teams delivering digital experiences. At the core of the systems of systems is a common language, design tokens, that breaks down the barriers between designers and developers.

Zen and the Art of Organizational Open Source

Open source software and communities can drive meaningful change in organizations. What lessons can we take from open source to drive change in our own organizations? According to the Linux Foundation, it has been estimated that Free and Open Source Software constitutes 70-90% of any given piece of modern software solutions.

In order to reach true organizational open source zen, organizations need to take a stepwise approach to embracing open source. Learn how to categorize your organization's open source zen level, what steps it should take to level up, and why leveling up will ultimately bring more value and help differentiate your organization from the competition.

What does it mean to go deep and maximize the value of open source in your organization? Open source enlightenment can bring a huge return on investment for an organization. Let’s talk about how we can reach true open source enlightenment.

Full-Stack JS Today: Fastify, GraphQL, and React

First there was LAMP, then there was MEAN and JAM. But now it’s 2023 and times have changed…

What does the modern full stack look like? It’s built entirely from free and open source technologies, it’s scalable beyond imagination, it can run on-premise or in the cloud, it should get out of the way and not lead to vendor lock-in, and most importantly it should “just work.” There are so many tools to choose from. Choosing the right stack from day one can be the difference between project success and a smoldering pile of software ashes. Using fastify, mercurius, urql, and react we can build high-performance full-stack applications using all javascript technologies.

This talk focuses attendees on what a highly scalable technology stack looks like in 2023.

Slide into the Future
