Bring out the best! - Effective Scrum master coaching with the clover model
In my last assignment I have been coaching scrum masters in one-on-one sessions. Since there was always a lot going on, we never really got past the “what’s keeping you occupied and what is hot-today questions. Although these sessions were useful and appreciated, I still felt that we were missing out on some important topics. For that reason, I developed the clover-4 model. It’s not a formal product, more I checklist that can be used by everyone to have more effective coaching sessions.
Using the model we started discussing:
1. Challenges of the day, what is the SM working on, what does he/she find difficult and what are tips/solutions and areas of attention?
2. Role fulfilment, are all responsibilities of the SM role getting attention? Are there aspects of the role under/over emphasized? What is the cause of this and are actions needed to balance this?
3. Team Metrics, what can we learn from the team metrics
4. Growth & training, what skills and knowledge should we work on? Are training and workshops needed to develop the teams, stakeholders, or scrum masters?
This did not only enrich the individual meetings. I acted as a transformational driver as well. Since it triggers some important questions.
• Like, how do we perceive the role of the SM, do we agree on the role and how is it described.
• Discussing the team metrics in coaching sessions, triggered discussion about the metrics we wanted to use, and what we could learn from that.
• The last question also triggers to align expectations. If we want to send all scrum masters or teams on a training, do we get support for this.
In the talk I will explain the model, explain the ‘transformational’ aspects lurking behind it and give examples of how you can shape role-agreement, metrics and workshops and embed these in the organisation or in the CoP or scrum master guild.
Agile Coach – The discomfort of a job title
The job title "Agile Coach" is increasingly uncomfortable for both professionals and organizations involved in Agile transformations. Agile transformations today differ significantly from those a decade ago, impacting the roles and expectations of Agile professionals. Derk Jan de Grood and Nienke Alma, experienced Agilsts, reflect on their discomfort with the title and the evolving nature of Agile support.
In their talk, they examine how their role has changed over time, why organizations might share their discomfort, and what kind of support adds value to today's Agile transformations. They encourage attendees to reflect on how they position themselves in the Agile job market and how organizations view the value of Agile professionals. The session offers insights into what new job titles or roles might better capture the contributions of Agile professionals in today's context.
