When cloud costs just don't cut it - visibility into the unknown en
As PerimeterX grew from a few dozen accounts to a three digit number and as our GCP spend grew along with it; We found ourselves asking ever more complex questions about our cost model. Our main purpose was to better empower our organization, both Dev and Finance to reach better decisions. The first was around architecutre, design and operations while the second was around optimizing contract pricepoints and organizational performance. In this talk we will talk about how we evolved the basic visibility provided by GCP to the FinOps dream and better serving both Engineering and Finance understand a complex cost model by account in a complex multi-tenant environment allowing for year over year reductions in cost by properly targeting the right issues.
Kafka, Go, and BigQuery - combining open source and cloud en
Over the past four years we've had quite a roller coster ride of data. From using Spark, to adhoc applications and finally finding ourselves squeezing everything we could from BigQuery. In this session we will review the evolution we've gone through along with the various tidbits and workarounds we've collected about using Kafka, Go, and BigQuery at petabyte scale.
Managing Your Managers...They're People Too... en
When you graduate into being a team leader or any other kind of manager you are (if you’re lucky) granted some time to learn how to work with your employees. Communication, work processes, expectations and motivation. Issues passed on to you by your peers, managers and external consultants and coaches . This layer, however, is at best 10-20% of the work force (depending on how flat you’ve been able to keep your organization) . What about the rest of us?! In this talk, we will go over a few of the basic skills and tools no one tells you about which you can use when you need to manage your managers…cause at the end of the day, they’re human too…
How come no one told me that?! en he
20 years is a long time, just enough time to notice some stuff gone missing. To forget a few courses. But mostly to understand that you spent three years in college (six in my case, don’t ask...) and you ended up doing stuff that has nothing to do with any of it. How can that be you ask? What can we do about this horrible condition?
Fear not!!! In the time we will have together we will review two very painful subjects. The first will be human beings. Yes, those walking disease spreading water sacks. Small hint, they’re going to take a large portion of your time and work space, sometimes more than that cool laptop you just got so you better get used to them and understand how they work. We’ll talk about stuff like job interviews and what you’re meant to gain from them. We’ll talk about teamwork and communication. About the people “around” your team and the rules of engagement. And most importantly we’ll talk about how to develop your career, cause after you’ve made that first step you have twenty years of additional steps (less if you’re lucky, or the other way around, depending on how you look at it). Oh yeah, there’s also that thing you ARE studying, writing code. We’ll also talk about how it’s roughly 10% of what you’re expected to do. We’ll talk about what happens to it when it’s actually put into use and how that will affect your day to day (and unfortunately nights).
You’re more than invited to join us, it’s going to be one hell of a talk...oh, and there will be punch and pie...everyone loves punch and pie...

מ-hello world קטן,

Oh, the problems you'll know! he en
Congratulations!
Today is your day.
You’re off to great places!
What problems you’ll know!

You have an IDE on your belt
You have a profile on Linkedin you just filled
There’s absolutely nothing you can’t build!

You’ll build a hello world in one burst
All the way to storing state (it’s the worst!)
The data breach, the team mate who wouldn’t flinch, and the customer who just wouldn't budge an inch…
Oh, the problems you;ll know!

From queuse, to geo-location
Even warding off attacks from your latest creation
Building software isn’t easy, no not at all
Drop by and listen, stay for a while
The talk is in the GREAT HALL!
We’ll talk about what to do, when, and how
Come now
Cheer up
It’ll help, fo sure
Worst case, it’ll be a bit of a bore
a.k.a. a short session on what happens to that piece of code you just wrote after you wrote it. How it matures and goes from being that perfect piece of theory to something that needs to handle state, high availability, geo-distribution, malicious attacks and daily changes. In each part we will also present some things which can help you better prepare for this growth while maintaining what little sanity you have left...
