Hey there! I am a tech enthusiast, retro gamer, and general nerd. When I am not busy breaking stuff for fun, I can be found breaking stuff professionally at Capgemini. You also might find me restoring and modifying old video game systems, most notably Game Boys.

I believe in simple explanations and demos over slide-heavy presentations. I tend to speak a lot about Azure related subjects, but I also enjoy speaking about people skills and ways of optimizing work. Join my talks if you want to have a good time, get some free stickers, and maybe learn something new!

I put down whatever catches my attention on my blog, https://damn.engineer, and my X (formerly Twitter) account, @theEugeneRomero.

This time, they will finally realize I'm a fraud.

Imposter Syndrome is one of our industry's most prevalent issues. Regardless of background, education, or experience, most of us have been afflicted by it at one point or another, or might even continue to deal with it on a day-to-day basis.

But, what is the history of Imposter Syndrome? What causes it? And is there something we can do to fight it? Join this talk to find out!

Securing your app's communications with Kubernetes, Azure Key Vault, and TLS certificates

Encrypted communications are a basic requirement for any modern software application. However, managing TLS certificates and automatically installing them on Kubernetes apps can seem daunting or time-consuming.

In this talk, I will demonstrate how to use Azure Key Vault, Kubernetes and the CSI Secrets' Store Driver to securely store, install and use TLS certificates in your applications. Encrypt all the things!

Automate every layer: Using Terraform to deploy, configure and maintain Azure Kubernetes clusters

Managed Kubernetes clusters are all the rage these days. With a few clicks, you can easily spin up a Kubernetes cluster without having to worry about the underlying workings of the technology. But, where do you go from there?

How can you easily reproduce a Kubernetes setup, configure it, deploy microservices to it, and maintain it? In this talk, I will discuss how we use Terraform to fully automate Azure Kubernetes clusters at a Norwegian public sector agency. Our goals with this project were to automate every step of creating the clusters, setting them up, and continuously deploying our services. Additionally, we attempt to keep the amount of technologies low, to make it easier for new developers to come up to speed.

Automate all the things!

Howto: Securely consuming secrets in Azure Container Apps

Azure Container Apps are a new, flexible alternative to full-fledged Kubernetes clusters. As with other application platforms, the question of how to securely work with secrets is quickly raised.

In this talk, I will discuss how secrets stored in Key Vaults can be safely and securely consumed by applications running in Azure Container Apps. The presentation will include a demonstration where I will show the setup in action.

An unpopular opinion: Get rid of Pull Requests!

Pull Requests. Love them or hate them, they are an integral part of a developer's day to day. But, are PRs the golden ticket to a perfect application? Would a PR-free environment be conductive to more productivity, or even (gasp!) a better codebase? Lets find out!

Subjects discussed:
- Way too big PRs
- Stevie Wonder PRs
- Simple changes
- Short-lived branches
- Code ownership vs delegating to reviewers
- When to use them: hard-to-reverse changes, new interesting features, new approaches to things
