Avoiding the "Grey Box of Death": Automatically Checking For Broken Visuals in Power BI

Have you ever updated a semantic model/dataset and didn't realize it broke a visual in a Power BI report? Have you ever seen that "grey box of death" (or your customers call you about it) after making an update to Power BI? In this session, I demonstrate a way to combine Microsoft Playwright and Azure DevOps to automatically test for broken visuals and notify you about those issues.

Commenting Power Query with Azure OpenAI

Large Language Models (such as ChatGPT) can greatly enhance the way you develop and deliver Power BI solutions. In this session I will show you how to integrate Azure Open AI into Power BI using prompt engineering techniques.

Automated Testing with DAX Query View and Git Integration

Are you struggling with managing issues in your semantic models/datasets? Would you like to conduct tests and easily share those tests with your team? In this session I show you a DAX Query View Testing Pattern. This pattern combines the new DAX Query View feature in Power BI Desktop, Azure DevOps, and DataOps principles to help you improve project delivery and reduce errors.

Implementing Continuous Integration & Continuous Deployment for Power BI Semantic Models - Workshop

From version control to automated testing, applying DataOps principles to Power BI semantic models can be a challenge. In this session I show you how to overcome these challenges by using version control and building automated tests using free templates.

In the first half of the session, we'll introduce DataOps and then use Visual Studio Code and DAX Query View to build tests and run tests locally. I'll show techniques for quickly building tests for a data model and how to test schema/data drift.

In the second half of the session, I'll demonstrate how to commit the code to Azure DevOps and walk through a Continuous Integration pipeline. I'll cover Git terminology and how to extract metrics to evaluate your development process.

Session participants will also be provided free, open-source templates to use on their current or next Power BI project.

Querying SharePoint Data in Power BI - Options & Performance

Do you rely on SharePoint data for building your Power BI reports? Do you find dataset refreshes with SharePoint are exceedingly slow? If so, in this session I offer a review of the ways to connect to SharePoint within Power BI and techniques to improve refresh times.

Bringing DataOps to Power BI Dataflows

Implementing DataOps in your project can be a challenge if you are working on Power BI dataflows. How do you institute version control and how do you automate the testing of your dataflows? In this session I'll cover key DataOps principles and how tools like Azure Functions, Event Hub, and PowerShell can make you build a more reliable data analytic pipeline with Power BI dataflows.

DataOps 101 – A Better Way to Develop and Deliver Data Analytics

Power BI has revolutionized the industry by accelerating our ability to deliver Data Analytics solutions. But how do we ensure the code we build is reliable and the data is produced in a timely and trustworthy manner? Enter DataOps, a better way to develop and deliver Data Analytics Solutions. In this session, I’ll cover the concept of DataOps, why it matters to Power BI, and the principles that can drive you to continuously improve.

Querying Power BI REST APIs within a Power BI Dataset

Would you like to build a Power BI dataset that could inventory your workspaces, reports, datasets, and refresh schedule? Would you'd like to query another dataset to import into your dataset? In this session I'll show you how to leverage an open-source custom connector that connects to Power BI's REST APIs to do just that.

In this session I'll show you how to leverage an open-source custom connector that connects to Power BI's REST APIs to do just that.

This session introduces the open-source Power Query Custom Data Connector for Power BI REST APIs (https://github.com/kerski/powerquery-connector-pbi-rest-api-commercial), how to use it in Power BI Desktop, and I provide you a free Power BI template to get started for your current or next Power BI project.

How to Weave DataOps into Microsoft Fabric

Are you looking at upgrading from Power BI Pro or Premium Per User to Fabric? Are you struggling with managing issues with datasets, dataflows, reports, and dashboards which reduces the time your project team has to build new products? Learn how DataOps can help you improve project delivery, reduce errors, and which features in Fabric weave DataOps principles into the platform.
