Scalable and Cost-Effective Serverless Data Processing on AWS: Architecting for IoT and Beyond

IoT devices generate vast amounts of data with varying degrees of importance, urgency, and security requirements on an irregular basis. This data requires collection, processing, analysis, and utilization to deliver valuable insights and timely responses without violating any of the requirements.

The challenge is to design a data processing architecture that is scalable, reliable, secure, and cost-effective while minimizing complexity and avoiding the overhead of managing servers and infrastructure.

In this session, attendees will gain insights into leveraging AWS services such as AWS Lambda, Amazon S3, Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon Kinesis, and more to architect highly scalable and cost-effective data processing pipelines. We'll delve into real-world use cases and best practices for orchestrating serverless workflows that seamlessly handle diverse data streams.

By the end of the session, attendees will have the know-how and tools to design scalable and effective serverless data processing solutions on AWS. This will enable them to explore new opportunities for their projects and organizations, with or without IoT.

6 years of serverless – Lessons learned from real-world applications

The system that runs Grohe Sense and Guard was built 6 years ago on AWS almost exclusively using serverless technologies. This system grew during its lifetime to support many thousands of IoT devices and multiple hundreds of active users interacting with these devices in real-time. A lot has changed in these years, many technologies were replaced by better ones, but the serverless-first approach remained.

In this talk, I share with you the experience and some of the lessons we learned from developing such a huge system on serverless technologies. I will give you an opinionated list of do's and don'ts to demonstrate some of the trade-offs of the serverless architecture and how to get the most out of it while working around its shortcomings.

Demystifying Serverless: A deep dive into AWS Lambda

This talk dives into AWS Lambda’s architecture, explaining how it delivers automatic scalability, resilience, and a pay-as-you-go pricing model. We’ll explore its lifecycle—from provisioning to decommissioning runtime instances—and demonstrate how to customize runtimes or even build your own for specialized needs. Attendees will learn cost-optimization strategies, advanced features like SnapStart (for faster cold starts), and how to balance performance and budget with reserved concurrency and provisioned capacity.

Ideal for developers and architects, this session addresses Lambda’s limitations (e.g., cold starts, timeouts) and practical workarounds. By the end, you’ll understand how to optimize serverless workloads, reduce costs, and leverage Lambda’s full potential.

Starting Your .NET Journey on AWS: Diverse Approaches to Run Your Application on AWS

In this beginner-friendly talk, we will unravel the spectrum of deployment options – from virtual machines to serverless and everything in between– and explore essential AWS services.

A comparison of the different services like App Runner, EC2, and Lambda will guide you on when to use each for optimal performance and cost efficiency.
Additionally, you will learn how to navigate the AWS ecosystem and create cloud-first AWS applications that leverage the native AWS services using the AWS SDK.

Join us for a concise, practice-oriented session providing the knowledge to effectively orchestrate your .NET application or any other application on AWS. Unlock the potential of cloud infrastructure for scalability and performance.

Scalable and Cost-Effective Data Processing for Training and Fine-Tuning Generative AI

With the rise and widespread use of generic generative AI models, their presence is becoming ubiquitous. Using an out-of-the-box model is not enough to stand out or deliver unique results. Your only advantage over competitors is your data. Whether it's Gen AI, Machine Learning, Business Intelligence, or simple data visualization, the results are only as good as your data.

Data is continuously generated with varying degrees of importance, urgency, and freshness. This data needs to be collected, processed, analyzed, and fed into your AI system to deliver valuable insights and provide timely and accurate responses.

The challenge is to design a scalable, reliable, secure, and cost-effective data processing architecture that minimizes complexity and meets these constraints.

In this session, attendees will learn how to architect highly scalable and cost-effective data processing pipelines that power AI systems. We'll explore real-world use cases and best practices for orchestrating serverless workflows that seamlessly handle diverse data streams to empower custom, fine-tuned AI models.
