Kelly Thompson is the Regional Partnerships Director at LENA for the Mid-Atlantic Region.
For over 20 years, Kelly has been passionate about providing support to educators, children, families, and communities.

Over the years she has helped launch early literacy programs across the US. Her love for supporting early childhood professionals and programs is evident through the high-quality professional development she provides within the Mid-Atlantic region.
Kelly received her bachelor’s degree in sociology at LaSalle University in Philadelphia. She received her master’s degree in education at Neumann University and is currently completing coursework for her doctoral degree in Education at Walden University.
She was born and raised in Philadelphia and currently resides in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, and volunteering in her community.

Do Covid Babies Talk Less?

Over the past decade, peer-reviewed research studies have linked conversational turns to improved socio-emotional development, executive functioning, reading skills, & brain development. The greater the number of turns, the better the child's outcomes. Independent studies from researchers at LENA & at Brown University have arrived at remarkably similar & stark findings:Babies born during the COVID-19 pandemic are vocalizing less & experiencing less interactive talk with adults than their pre-pandemic peers, suggesting they may be at greater risk of experiencing language delays. In this session, we will explore the latest early talk research. Activities incorporating video and small group discussion will help participants practice simple research-based strategies for increasing interactive talk.
