Lonneke Opsteegh, PhD, is an expert in data communication, with a strong focus on dashboards and data visualizations. A solid data foundation and in-depth analyses are essential, but not sufficient to achieve real change in an organization. Using clear and direct visuals, Lonneke makes data understandable to everyone in the organization, including people without a "math knack"...

Lonneke designed Power BI dashboards, templates/style guides and a 'way of working' for TNO, Rabobank, ForFarmers, InRetail, Roompot, Kapimex, TIGRA and the University of Wageningen, among others. She also helped hundreds of trainees to design and build better graphs and dashboards, both in science, business and (semi-)government (e.g. Radboud University, GasUnie, various municipalities, ABN AMRO, Van Lanschot bankers, Pink Roccade).

Lonneke knows like no other how and why certain design elements work well or not so well in practice. She likes to take you along in the world of dashboard design and data visualization.

Double up the Power: combining Power BI with PowerPoint for strong storytelling

Since a few months it's possible to embed your Power BI dashboard in a PowerPoint presentation. But this does not make it a datastory just yet...

Some of the 'rules of thumb' for building presentations and building dashboards clash with each other. So how can you use Power BI in your presentation?

We want our presentations to have an effect on our audience. Your audience needs to do something, stop doing something or never forget something. In order to create such a change in your audience, people need more than just the 'dry' numbers. Their emotions should be triggered.

In this session we'll look at both the requirements for your Power BI dashboard and your presentation to truly build your datastory, consisting of both a strong narrative AND strong visuals that triggers emotion. To instigate actions we need more than the technicality to include Power BI in PowerPoint. We need storytelling for our audience to make a change.

The three layers of dashboard design

Become faster in designing your dashboards by using the three-layer method. Besides faster, your dashboards will have a more professional look and feel, and attuned to your key audience.
The design of dashboards can be split into three layers. Looking at your dashboard in that way, will help you tremendously with creating better dashboards. These are the layers we distinguish:
• the overall structure,
• a dashboard page/ tab,
• and each individual graph.
During this session we go swiftly through the 3 layers. Starting at the overall structure, we will work on building a wireframe to structure the information, getting to know our audience and work on incorporating your company style.
Then we quickly dive to the next layer: the dashboard tab. Where do you place the dashboard elements? Do you use navigation, and what filter type fits your dashboard?
We finish the session on the detailed level of graphs. Everyone has a ‘graph-vocabulary’: most people have 5 to 7 graphs that are top of mind. However, there are hundreds of graphs that can help you communicate your key message. We’ll discuss some graph specials, and focus on how you make your graph as effective as possible with some design choices.

Don't Be a Data Robot: How Empathy and Creativity Make Better Dashboards

We all know that a great Power BI dashboard is more than just a collection of technical features and data visualizations. At its core, a dashboard is a tool for communicating insights and driving action. And to do that effectively, we need to understand not just the data we're presenting, but also the people who will be using our dashboards. That's where the soft side of dashboards comes in. By focusing on empathy and creativity, we can create dashboards that not only look great, but also resonate with our stakeholders and drive meaningful business outcomes. In this session, we'll explore how to cultivate these soft skills to design better Power BI dashboards and deliver value to our clients and stakeholders.
In this session, we'll explore how empathy can be a powerful tool for driving better dashboard design. By putting ourselves in the shoes of our stakeholders and understanding their needs, concerns, and pain points, we can create more impactful and user-friendly dashboards that deliver insights and drive action. We'll also discuss how to cultivate creativity as a skill, and how to overcome common barriers to creativity such as self-doubt and fear of failure. Additionally, we'll explore how to communicate effectively with clients and stakeholders, and how to ask critical questions to get the information needed to design effective dashboards. Through interactive exercises, attendees will leave with practical strategies for leveraging empathy and creativity to design better Power BI dashboards that deliver value to clients and stakeholders.
