Mahreen Mustafa George is the Associate Director of Equity and School Services on the Whole Child Connection team at the Children's Institute. She is a multi-faceted facilitator, trainer, consultant, keynote speaker and Restorative Practitioner. Mahreen's expertise in equity-centered Social Emotional Learning, Culturally Responsive Practices, DEI&B (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging), transformational leadership, and conflict resolution stems from her applied experience and partnership with school districts in areas such as inclusive systems change, education code of conduct policies, responsive and restorative equity work, and the NYS Culturally Responsive and Sustaining Education Framework. Mahreen formerly served as the Executive Director at Partners in Restorative Initiatives (PiRI) and continues to support individuals and organizations in building communities of belonging while moving towards well-defined transformative and equity-focused outcomes for all stakeholders.

A Case Study for Building Adult SEL Skills through Affirming Affinity Groups for Educators of Color

In this poster, presenters will share a case study of an affinity group for educators of color and highlight how affinity groups can support the social and emotional competence and capacity of historically marginalized educators. In order to prioritize students’ social and emotional competence, schools must create inclusive environments where staff of color feel a sense of belonging.
