Teaching the IT Pro how to Dev - PowerShell, Source Control & Unit Testing

In this session we will look at how IT Pros (and developers) *could* be completing their day to day tasks in a more efficient manner with effective Unit Testing and Source Control of their Scripts.

This is a session where there will be chance to follow along (if you bring your own laptop) and learn in real time from the co-ordinator of the UK PowerShell User Groups - however you will also be lead to further community resources if you require further time after the session to get this built into your current day to day workflow.

Azure Deployment Mechanisms from the field

Come join me in a run through of the different mechanisms for deploying resources to Azure.
We will take a look at
• Portal
• Az CLI
• Az PowerShell
• ARM templates
• Bicep
• Terraform

Mental Health: Its Time to Talk

Mental health affects us all, albeit at varying levels of intensity, be it from having a restless nights sleep or Bi-Polar Disorder and is still a subject that we tend to approach with caution, if we even speak about it at all, whether with our colleagues and managers, doctors and even our closest friends and family.

Starting talking about our mental health is often hard, but it is one of the most powerful tools in your arsenal to managing your own and your team's mental health and should be discussed in all 1:1s.

Come and gain an insight into some of the things to look out for as preliminary signs that your colleagues, friends, family and perhaps, most importantly, yourself may be suffering, plus how to broach this all-important conversation.

Making Operational Azure Management a breeze.

Have you just started using the cloud? Perhaps you've been using it for a while and have experienced the dreaded resource sprawls or a huge bill at the end of the month.

The aim of this session is to showcase the all of the components available that allow organisations to embrace power of the cloud once they have invested time in laying down the key foundations for it's use.

Laying this operational governance foundation will ensure that your development team can then work in an agile way whilst enforcing that they work in accordance with all the governance, compliance & security, whilst ensuring that cost management, resource management and other cloud management aspects are implicitly adhered to as well giving your operations teams fewer headaches

Using Azure DevOps, ARM Templates and Terraform for standing up services in Azure.

In this session I will cover Hashicorp Terraform and how you can use this in replacement for Azure ARM templates surfacing the lessons learned with all possible gotchas that I learned on the way from changing over to terraform for standing up all kinds of services in Azure and how I am making full use of Azure DevOps for the full CI/CD pipeline experience

Using Azure as a Platform for good - The story behind mhasl.me

In this session I will cover the technical background of a new site that I have developed for sharing stories related to many different aspects of Mental Health and how it is something that affects someone just like you or me

In this session I will cover
Architectural decisions and why I made the decisions I made
The Technicals behind the site and the components used as part of the building, maintaining and development of the site, from Azure DevOps to Azure Resources and how I built a repeatable deployment of the Resources that made the site a possibility from the get go
Security Decisions that I made along the way and why I chose them
Lessons learned along the way
And lastly why I think this is a topic that in tech we need to talk more about
