Power BI Conditional Formatting – Highlight What Matters
A Power BI report isn’t just about showing data; it’s about guiding the user and drawing attention to what really matters. Conditional formatting plays a key role in that. You can highlight important values, show performance against targets, and help users focus without adding extra clutter.
In this session, you’ll learn how to use conditional formatting and DAX to improve the user experience of your visuals. We'll go through practical examples that can make a real difference in your daily work. But, we will also discuss the importance of using conditional formatting wisely, really helping the end user and not just adding extra elements to your Power BI report.
Dynamic titles
Automatically change (sub)titles based on filters or selections. This adds clarity and reduces the need for extra labels or explanations.
Color coding in visuals
Use DAX to color-code your visuals, highlight KPIs that hit targets, flag issues, or focus attention on important areas.
Dynamic labels
Adjust text and values based on user selections. This allows you to guide users through the data and make the report feel more responsive.
Simplifying visuals & visual tweaks
Conditional formatting can be used to show whether targets are met, highlight exceptions, or call out trends. These visual cues help users spot what needs attention without reading all the numbers.
By the end of the session, you will know all the areas in Power BI where you can apply conditional formatting. Additionally, you’ll gain ideas on how to implement it effectively and understand the reasoning behind it. Just because you can use conditional formatting doesn’t always mean you should. So, when does it actually make sense to do so?
