Data Security in the Modern Enterprise: From Digital Oil to Digital Uranium
This talk explores the fundamental shift in how organizations must approach data security and governance in today's regulatory landscape. Drawing from extensive experience in highly regulated industries including government statistical offices, financial institutions, and aviation, the presentation examines how data has evolved from being "the new oil" to becoming "the new uranium" - requiring sophisticated protection not just against external threats, but also for internal handling.
The Matryoshka Platform - How Platforms Beget Platforms
When we set out to build a platform of any kind, we intend to underpin everything built on top of it. In reality, however, we find that our platforms start to drift after some time. That drift may begin during the initial building phase. New components are discovered in the stack, and the business requests another platform initiative. Suddenly, we find ourselves with platforms within platforms.
What mechanism drives this effect, and how can we utilise the mechanisms that form platform creation to our benefit?
In this talk, I explore how platforms beget platforms in the context of data platforms. Dissect what I believe to be the driving mechanisms behind these unpredictable changes. And look at ways to utilise this to our benefit when managing platforms.
Comparative analysis of Modern data architecture
In the domain of data platforms, data management and data analysis, there is an ongoing discussion on the merits and drawbacks of the different Architectures. Proponents and detractors alike argue passionately for and against their preferred brand of labels on data.
But how different are they actually, and how do they all seek to achieve their goal of helping us manage data better? I have looked at some of the significant cloud-based data architectures out there and performed a comparative analysis of them. The architecture in Question is Data Lake, Medalion, AWS Modern data architecture, and Kimball Enterprise data warehouse.
In this talk, I summarise my findings, distil what I think the essence of these architecture boils down to, and discuss how we can see past the names and descriptions to start organising data.
The Emperor's New Data Platform: Navigating the Reality of Platform Modernization
Format: Conference Talk Duration: 45 minutes Language: English/Norwegian (please specify preference)
Abstract: This talk examines the often-challenging journey of data platform modernization projects, focusing on the disconnect between expectations and reality. Drawing from real-world experiences, it explores why these initiatives, frequently heralded as transformative "crown jewels," can result in solutions that feel unchanged or potentially worse after years of effort. The presentation combines practical insights with humor to analyze modernization archetypes, communication patterns, and strategies for successful implementation.
Key Topics:
- Common patterns in data platform modernization
- Understanding and managing stakeholder expectations
- Communication across organizational boundaries
- Identifying and addressing resistance to change
- Practical approaches to maintaining momentum
- Bridging the gap between promise and delivery
Target Audience:
- Data Platform Architects
- Project Managers
- Technical Leaders
- Enterprise Architects
- Development Teams involved in modernization efforts
Technical Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Value to Attendees: Participants will gain:
- Real-world examples of successful and challenging modernizations
- Tools for effective cross-organizational communication
