Navigating DevOps with Maps and Compasses

How to Navigate Software Delivery With Confidence

Too many organizations rely solely on "Compasses" like specific metrics, principles and reference companies (being more like Spotify) instead of pairing that reference with "Maps" of where you are right now, and what surrounds you. I'll introduce my favourite maps: Outcome, Value Stream, Dependency, and Capability Maps, and how to use them to move with confidence towards your compass target.

Takeaways:
- How Outcome, Value Stream, Dependency, and Capability Maps help visualize and share where you are right now
- How to pair Compasses with Maps to drive progress in the right direction
- How to build actionable, data-driven maps that make the path clear to everyone

Map What Is, Get to What's Next

This experience report details my involvement with 3 organizations of 3 different sizes (small startup, small-to-medium enterprise, and giant enterprise) to illustrate how I've used a form of Value Stream Mapping to help them define their current state and leverage data collected in the process to confidently identify (often surprising) risks and opportunities.

Takeaways:
- How to step back, visualize and measure to challenge assumptions, gain clarity and share it.
- Remove uncertainty about where to focus, how to communicate and represent flow.
- How to create lean, high impact value stream illustrations to make stronger decisions.

Value Stream Mapping is Dead. Long Live Value Stream Mapping!

Many teams and organizations are seeing positive outcomes from focusing on value and flow in their teams, but how do you actually do that?

Value Stream Mapping (VSM) aims to do exactly that, but coming from physical manufacturing, and being decades old is not helpful in today's tech teams. Most Value Stream Maps you'll see are messy, jargon-filled diagrams nobody but a consultant could read.

In this talk, I'll give you the 20% of VSM goodness that produces 80% of the value, and share specific examples of how to create and use a VSM to debug workflows and save time, frustration and waste.

We'll cover:
- Why Value Stream Mapping is useful
- How it's done and how you can do it
- Where it applies
- What challenges it addresses
- Common outcomes and ROI

Five Reasons Value Stream Thinking Is the Future of DevOps

Teams everywhere are beginning to adopt Value Stream Thinking as a foundational element of their DevOps strategy. Companies like Nationwide, Walmart, Barclays, BMW, Verizon, Liberty Mutual, AT&T, John Deere, Adidas and many more are seeing incredible clarity and alignment driven by Value Stream visualization, design, and measurement.

This session will introduce the benefits of Value Stream Thinking and techniques, how an organization should go about implementing it and why it's the next logical step for organizations on a DevOps journey. Attendees will hear real-world transformation stories and results achieved with Value Stream techniques.

Value Stream thinking brings visibility, alignment and measurement to your organization in a tangible and clear paradigm. Value Stream Mapping is an accessible, inclusive technique that surfaces opportunities across every facet of DevOps improvement:
- Team building and alignment
- Data-driven change
- Supply chain visibility and measurement
- Culture and capability foundations
- Digital transformation progress
Attend this session to learn the secrets of successfully adopting this game-changing technique to make dramatic improvements across your organization.

The 4x4 Method of DevOps Traction

Many teams have embraced the idea of tracking DORA’s 4 Key Metrics, and are enthusiastic about using them to measure improvement, but they often lack a clear starting point - much less a path to success. The 4x4 Method provides not only that path, but the quick wins to get traction in the first hours.

This session describes a winning approach to making progress with any key initiative, framed within the context of DevOps adoption and improvement. It has evolved through many iterations across several mediums and now in the age of remote-first collaboration, is finally easy to share, and easy to start. The system is collaborative and remote by default, but works equally well in a room full of people and post-its. It can even provide value as a solo investigation. It requires no specific tooling. It can be leveraged to drive both continuous improvement and innovation.

The 4x4 Method focuses on 4 sequential mapping activities that build upon eachother to create clarity, alignment, confidence, and momentum. The four maps are:
- Outcome maps
- Value Stream maps
- Dependency maps
- Capability maps

The 4x4 Method was created through 20 years of improvement experience. It sits upon principles, practices, and learning from Lean, Agile, Systems Thinking, Visual Learning, Collaborative Facilitation, and many other bodies of knowledge. It was created to help teams make clear and consistent progress towards their performance goals. The 4x4 Method is named not only for the 2 sets of 4 components it comprises, but because it was designed to provide a vehicle to help you navigate challenging terrain.

This was created as an on-ramp for anyone interested in the DORA 4 Key Metrics of DevOps but works for getting started or making progress with any improvement target

Reinventing Value Stream Mapping for Digital Flow

If you've never heard of Value Stream Mapping, you're missing out on a superpower you can leverage to multiply your team's velocity, quality, and time spent building value for your organization.

If you HAVE heard of it, you may be thinking it's too time consuming, complicated, and connected to its roots in manufacturing to apply to varied and complex design, software, and knowledge work.

In either case, this talk will surprise you.

In this talk, I'll present a lean, flexible, and powerful method for understanding, measuring, and improving your team's workflow - and you can use it tomorrow.

Takeaways:
- How Value Stream Mapping can help you 4x your capacity, velocity, and quality
- How collaborative mapping aligns leaders and contributors from all disciplines
- How to use Value Stream Mapping for knowledge work
- What to watch out for, and my best tips for mapping
