Leading beyond the fish bowl: the impact of culturally responsive leadership on the austerity existi

Proposal Title:
Leading beyond the fish bowl: the impact of culturally responsive leadership on the austerity existing in a traditional medical education workplace

Description:
This ignite presentation will explore the influence of mid-level medical education leaders and administrators' use of a culturally responsive leadership approach to build the collective efficacy of staff members through team building, professional learning and growth opportunities, and collaboration in order to improve team morale and job satisfaction.

Narrative:
Medical education leadership facilitated behind the veil of a traditional educational program model promotes the marginalization of stakeholders thereby reducing them to work in silos that leads to low team morale and high attrition. Leadership approach can be defined by the pedagogies, practices, and policies that dictate the behaviors of educational leaders and administrators. This presentation will offer a culturally responsive leadership approach as a praxis for building a more inclusive culture and climate in medical education. Through story-telling, the beginning of this presentation will explore organizational constructs that have historically obstructed the leadership behaviors of mid-level medical education leaders and administrators. It will then move into an exploration of the tenants of the culturally responsive leadership framework. Culturally responsive leadership is both, a paradigm shift that counters the harmful effects of hegemonic practices and beliefs; and it is a leadership approach that empowers leaders to support marginalized and minoritized people within a diverse space. This theory supports the notion that leadership behaviors socially reproduce milieus that promote equality, inclusiveness, advocacy, and social justice. This presentation will conclude by igniting the audience towards challenging school-centric policies and practices through the development and implementation of a leadership culture that is undergirded by team-building activities, professional learning and growth opportunities, and interdependent and cross-functional collaboration in order to promote a more inclusive organizational culture and climate.

The presenter hopes to garner feedback from the audience that will extend their knowledge of team-building models, professional learning opportunities, and insights on a sustainable program evaluation framework.
