Growing Pains: Scaling and Re-architecting Systems Under Fire

When our tiny startup was acquired by a giant corporate we tried to understand all the possible implications on our engineering organization. We thought the giant scale would catch up with us at some point, but like everything in tech that's at high velocity, it came much sooner than planned. We quickly understood that our infant system built for our first phases was starting to break down under million user scale.

We needed to re-architect... and under fire! With the sudden influx of production clients we couldn't disappoint.

But that wasn’t all! We needed to do so while pivoting our app to be user facing for the first time.

In this talk, we’ll discuss tackling a whole new set of challenges for a small fish suddenly thrown into a huge ocean - including architecture breakers, scaling up and re-building ourselves with a reliable, scalable, user friendly AND facing system.

IGNITE: Software skills I learned from musicals

We all know our software engineering, but did you ever believe that musicals and software engineering could go hand in hand? In this talk we will see how concepts from musical theatre can be useful to writing and delivering code.

Interview skills I learned from musicals

We all know what software engineering interviews are about., But have you ever thought that these interviews could go hand in hand with... musicals?

In this talk we will see how concepts from the musical theatre can be useful when looking for a new job. Some of these concepts can help us better prepare for an interview, while others can help us find our strengths and make a bigger impact. All of the musical theatre concepts combined can help us get better at interviews and drive us to become better software engineers and managers.

The world is full of drama - let's add a spark to our job search!

Building bias aware environments

Onboarding new members into an engineering team is not easy on anyone. In a short period of time, the new team member is required to be able to bring professional value and become an impactful member on the one hand, and on the other hand — to be an integral part of the team’s and the company’s culture.

When the new member is the only one of its gender on the team, we need to make sure that we have a bias-aware environment. In this talk, Victoriya will provide tips and examples on how to build a bias-aware environment, where new team members will feel welcome and will be able to focus on doing great engineering.

Effectively managing the engineering of ML/AI - lessons learned from... musicals!

Engineering management varies greatly between teams, domain and companies. There are more and more ML features intertwined in a company's deliverables, and it's not straitforward to manage data science domains with an engineering background. But have you ever thought that some of the best lessons we can learn about managing data scientists and ML/AI systems can be found in... musicals?

In this talk we will see how concepts from the musical theatre can be useful when engineering managers dive into managing data teams. Some of these concepts can help us better plan and measure success, others allow us to communicate progress of data features - all the while focusing on providing impact using a whole new language.

The world is full of drama - let's add a spark to our data teams management skills!

Software jungle where dreams are made

Here's a dream job! You're working on the newest tech, the team you're on has the best reputation in the company and your product manager totally gets you! Amazing right? If this description doesn't fit, don't worry you're not alone, let's see how we can turn things around.

Last year I became an R&D group manager of 15 excellent programmers in 3 teams. The product was so unique we needed to behave like a startup within the organisation. We needed to pitch ourselves for money, to bring potential clients aboard, to find a bigger purpose and an identity to let us become the company's gold.
So wether you're an entrepreneur or an intrapreneur - big corporation software groups and small startups are not that different when it comes to the engineering teams' PR.
By the end of my talk, both developers and managers will be able to strengthen their teams strengths and create your own empires!

Predictive Maintenance - How Does Data Science Revolutionize the World of Machines?

Predictive maintenance helps to predict problems and optimize the maintenance life cycle. Using data science to solve mechanical issues - revolutionizes the world of machines.

In today’s world of machines, there are two leading maintenance techniques. They support a standard machine life cycle. Predictive maintenance revolutionizes the future of machines. It tracks each of the machines’ unique life cycle and doesn’t generalize. It allows us to know if they need to be attended to in advance. This maintenance method provides information on upcoming, unknown or unpredicted critical failures. It creates an effective and innovative environment. Using data science to solve predictive maintenance revolutionizes the way we look at machines. It changes the data collection approach, enhances its quality and allows proper usage of the collected data. In a world full of machines, we need to be the bridge connecting the methods of the past to the opportunities of the future.

Software Architecture for Data Products Workshop

The world is moving forward, data volume for systems grows more and more over time, and companies are often required to make the shift towards being data driven. Data products - products based on ML/AI - require us to re-architect our systems to support and analyze a lot of data, as the classic backend approach to support data systems is often not good enough.
In this workshop, Shelly Shmurack and Vicki Kalmanovich will share their product and engineering shared point of view to allow building data products in various maturity stages. Participants will define requirements, design and evaluate success when building data products. We'll go over best practices for building infrastructure when working on data products and see how to provide plenty of value for organizations that need to build data products.
A good software architecture for data products can change the face of the company and be as valuable as gold. If you want to build data products and have a backend background - this workshop is meant for you!
