Workin' 9-5
“You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.” - Brené Brown
What you do and who you are sometimes become tangled into one - over time you become your role.
The inability to separate yourself from your role can negatively affect your mental and physical wellbeing; you'll become emotionally spent from putting work at the core of your life.
Devastating effects can follow if you become absorbed into your role or organisation as central to your identity. What happens when they fall away? How much control do we really have?
Who are we without our work?
While it's a good thing to find meaning in your work, it is important to remember that we are not solely defined by what we do or who our employers are.
I'll tell you the story of how I navigated many intense career changes while keeping connection with my self-worth. Exploring your idea of self can support your ability to remain flexible while navigating life's many challenges. You'll walk away with some simple, practical ideas of what you could look into, or help someone else look at, to unlink role and personal identity.
Money (That's What I Want)
“The best use of money as a motivator is to hire great people and then pay them enough to take the issue of money off the table.” - Dan Pink
Sometimes, the issue of money stays on the table. Do you think you're being underpaid as compared to peers with similar experience? Has someone in your team raised this concern to you, as trusted advisor, mentor, or coach?
Discussing salary and especially requesting for your salary to be relooked can be extremely scary! It's something we often avoid, with far-reaching consequences.
I'll tell you the story of how I went about confirming that I was underpaid, and correcting my salary. (Hint: the SUGSA Salary Survey was involved!) After introducing you to the steps I took, I'll share about the support I had from others and how it helped me tackle these conversations.
You'll walk away with some practical ideas of what you could look into, or help someone else look at, in order to address being underpaid as compared to peers.
Beware, Impostor!
Have you ever been in a meeting and thought about how everyone else seems to know exactly what they're doing and that at any moment they'll realise that you absolutely do not? Everyone else is great at their jobs, and you are an impostor, despite having similar experience and education? It sounds like you have Impostor Syndrome.
Join us in exploring Impostor Syndrome - what it is, its far-reaching impact, and how we might navigate this intricate (and incredibly common) challenge. You'll learn how to identify it, and how to step away from unfounded feelings of inadequacy. Our talk will highlight the benefit of leaders nurturing environments where people can overcome their sense of being "less than". We’ll leave you with the knowledge to take control of your self-esteem so that you can work with the confidence your skills and experience deserve.
Make Vulnerability Your Superpower
Feeling the pressure to be perfect in the workplace? Join us to explore how the fear of failure hinders human connection. The antidote? Vulnerability.
This may seem like a contradiction, yet studies have found that human vulnerability is one of the most effective ways to create real, valuable connection. Our talk will highlight the benefit of opening up to others specifically as a foundation for impactful and authentic collaboration. We'll leave you with the skills to become your authentic self at work.
The robots are coming for our jobs! The skills developers need to be forever employable.
Delve into how the technology industry is changing and which skills technical people should acquire to make sure they continue to be relevant in a changing world. The “soft” skills we ignore today will be the “hard” skills of the future - things like Artificial Intelligence, COVID, distributed work etc. are changing the landscape of the technology industry.
