Actions

Bill started down the path of software development in the nineties, building games and web pages instead of doing his chores. His professional career began in 2005, and his passion for programming has only grown in the years since. He is most at home when buried deep in front-end code, but has done a little bit of everything. He is currently a Senior Front-End Engineer at Mythical Games, specializing in meme-fu (as well as front-end development and architecture). When not at work, Bill can be found playing with his kids or joining friends for a bit of Minecraft or Dungeons & Dragons.

Your Assumptions Are Wrong, and Your Software Is Bad

Gathering requirements is hard. We need the right mix of clarity and flexibility to ensure that everyone understands what needs to be done without committing to specific implementation details up front. But how do we accomplish this when everyone's needs and perspectives are so different? In this session, we will talk about the different stages of requirements gathering and the kinds of questions we should be asking ourselves and each other. From the customer to the developer, and everyone in between, this talk will have a little something for all who participate in the product development cycle.

Now You're Speaking My Language: Getting Started with Localization

The world is getting smaller, and if you build anything for the web, it is becoming increasingly important to ensure your content reaches as many people as possible. One piece of this puzzle which is commonly overlooked is localization. In this session, we will talk about the importance of localizing your apps, but it doesn't end there. We'll talk about what actually goes into the process of localizing an application (hint: it's more than just translating strings). We will discuss planning and pitfalls, then wrap things up with strategies for localization across multiple products or teams. There will be some code examples using React and React Intl, but the broader concepts can be applied to any web application.
