This journey has started at a number of organisations - with promising initial results. In this talk I’ll share patterns which I use to break down bureaucracy, reduce time to market, create a culture of cross-team collaboration and make work fun. I want to inspire you to do the same - starting in your team, then radiating out into the organisation.

Leistungsstarke Teams werden oft durch langsame oder dysfunktionale Organisationen behindert, wodurch der Impakt, den sie eigentlich haben könnten, geschmälert wird. Aber was kann man als Otto Normalentwickler dagegen tun?

Ich glaube, dass Arbeitsplätze von Grund auf verändert werden können, angefangen beim technischen Kern, über die Teams bis hin zum Management, so dass ganze Unternehmen verbessert werden.

Auf diesem Weg befinden sich einige Organisationen - mit aussichtsreichen ersten Ergebnissen. In diesem Vortrag teile ich mit euch Methoden aus meiner Praxis, die Bürokratie abbauen, Time to Market verkürzen, eine Kultur der teamübergreifenden Zusammenarbeit schaffen und für Spaß beim Arbeiten sorgen. Ich möchte dich dazu inspirieren, das Gleiche zu tun - angefangen in deinem Team und dann auf die ganze Organisation ausstrahlend.

The developers in your organisation are reinventing the technical wheel every day. Besides coding, they need to handle cross-cutting issues like ops, compliance and security. This takes time, results in a large technical footprint, and inevitably many of the solutions don’t match the best practices you would hope for.

We use Backstage, an open-source platform created by Spotify, to help solve these problems. Instead of restricting autonomy and mandating solutions, you provide easy-to-use templates which lead developers down a “golden path” of best practices with very little effort. It also offers a web interface in which all services, libraries and tools in the organisation can be found, along with their documentation as code.

In this talk I’ll introduce Backstage with live coding. I’ll show you how we use it to get a hello-world project deployed to production in minutes. I’ll demonstrate the primary benefits, the drawbacks, and the alternatives. You’ll leave the talk with a good idea of whether Backstage could help you, and if so, how you can convince your company to use it.

Die Entwickler in deinem Unternehmen erfinden das technische Rad jeden Tag neu. Neben der Programmierung müssen sie sich auch um übergreifende Themen wie Betrieb, Compliance und Sicherheit kümmern. Das kostet Zeit, führt zu einem großen technischen Fußabdruck und zwangsläufig entsprechen viele der Lösungen nicht den Best Practices, die du dir wünschst.

Wir nutzen Backstage, eine von Spotify entwickelte Open-Source-Plattform, um diese Probleme zu lösen. Anstatt die Autonomie einzuschränken und Lösungen vorzuschreiben, stellst du benutzerfreundliche Vorlagen zur Verfügung, die Entwickler mit wenig Aufwand auf einen "goldenen Pfad" der Best Practices führen. Außerdem bietet es eine Weboberfläche, in der alle Dienste, Bibliotheken und Werkzeuge der Organisation zusammen mit ihrer Dokumentation als Code zu finden sind.

In diesem Vortrag werde ich Backstage mit Live-Coding vorstellen. Ich zeige dir, wie wir es nutzen, um ein Hello-World-Projekt innerhalb von Minuten in die Produktion zu überführen. Ich zeige dir die wichtigsten Vorteile, die Nachteile und die Alternativen. Am Ende des Vortrags wirst du wissen, ob Backstage auch für dich geeignet ist und wenn ja, wie du dein Unternehmen davon überzeugen kannst, es einzusetzen.
