Your local community needs you!

As an active member of the London Java Community (LJC), I'm often asked "What we are doing in the LJC?". But I think this is the wrong question.

In this talk, I will try to pitch to the audience why they should support their local community and what is there for them based on my own experience.

Women, Forgotten Pioneers of IT Revolution

Currently, there are only 28% of women holding technology-related jobs. To bridge that gap, we need to understand why we ended up here. And for that, we need to look into the history of computing.

Today, when we are talking about pioneers of the IT revolution, we can list many names, but they are mostly males, maybe except Ada Lovelace or Creola Katherine Johnson. In this talk, I will tell the story of women, who have played a crucial role since the dawn of computing and who, with the help of the state, have been marginalised and forgotten.

Why do I feel like a fraud? My impostor syndrome story

Choose a room in any professional setting and you’ll likely find that over two-thirds of the people in it have something surprising in common. What is it? They feel that they don’t belong. They feel like frauds. They believe they have cheated their way into the room. They feel like IMPOSTERS.
This isn’t limited by rank or success – even high achievers suffer imposter syndrome.
In this talk, we will try to systematise our knowledge of what impostor syndrome is and classify it as not one type fits all.  I will try to show how to overcome it based mostly on my own experience - sharing my own and other people’s stories and breaking down why we sometimes get those fraudulent feelings.
At the end of this session, I hope you’ll understand that you are not alone, and have some personal tools available to you in the future should imposter syndrome rear its ugly head.

SSL/TSL For Mere Mortals

SSL/TSL is one of the backbone technologies of WWW. It provides secure communication over the network. However, as it happens often with complex technologies, it tends to be surrounded by a lot of jargon, which makes it difficult to understand. But it doesn't have to be like that.
In this talk, in layman's terms, I will explain how SSL/TSL works and how it helps to address 3 critical questions of secure communication:
* Is my message read only by authorised receivers?
* Can I trust that I'm sending the message to the right receiver?
* Can I be sure that my message was not changed during transport?

Java Landscape. What a beautiful mess.

In this talk, I will systematise the knowledge of what we mean when we say "I write Java code?" or "I've installed Java". I will talk about different JDK builds and what role OpenJDK plays in all of this. I will also explain what LTS means when it comes to Java.

Jakarta EE 101

Jakarta EE still carries a lot of baggage from its Java EE days — that it’s outdated, not responsive, and no longer relevant because "everyone has moved to Spring." But are these opinions actually based on facts and a real understanding of the project?

In this talk, we’ll explore what Jakarta EE really is — and probably more importantly, what it’s not.
Is it a competitor to Spring? Is it still relevant today? What’s its relationship with MicroProfile? How many of us are actually using Jakarta EE in our projects?
And finally, is there anything new happening in Jakarta EE?
