Modern Anatomy for Programmers
Do you keep getting captivated by everything digital? New technologies, frameworks, futuristic tech? Yeah, me too.
The thing is, there is a vast amount of topics outside IT, which can be equally fascinating and worthy of exploration by a great analytical mind such as yours. They might also prove quite useful when it comes to maintaining your intellectual and physical capacity when you inevitably grow older and older.
One such subject is human anatomy, specifically that of a musculoskeletal system, as the body is something that we, IT people, often neglect. Because it's all about the brains anyway, right? WRONG! And you will find that out the hard way, eventually, if you haven't already.
Come to this talk to learn about relatively new discoveries in modern anatomy - fascia and fascial system - which give us the tools to reason about human body holistically, as one interconnected machinery that it is.
I will also give you some practical tips on how to utilize this knowledge so that you can stay fit in the coming years and have the energy to be able to keep up with the digital world.
Big Data - A Retrospective Study
It is been a while since Big Data was the hottest buzzword in tech but it is still very much relevant, given the explosion of use-cases for Advanced Analytics, Machine Learning and AI. I would like to take you on a journey in time - from the initial inception of the foundational ideas more than a decade ago until now and beyond - to the state-of-the-art and to what I believe is The Next Big Thing in Big Data.
We are way past the early adoption phase as now even large enterprises invest in Hadoop, enticed with the vision of huge cost savings as well as better and faster business insights. However, experience taught me that with all that innovation you can not forget about the fundamental principles of software engineering (duh!) and common sense. Otherwise, you are doomed to sink all this saved money into solving the wrong problems.
Sitting Considered Deadly
I assume your well-being is quite important to you. Then, do you do anything to take care of your health? Maybe you go for a run regularly or visit a gym? Practice yoga? Play squash? The thing is, it does not matter as much as you might think it does. Even if you exercise in leisure time on a regular basis, you spend most of your workday on your buttocks and that, as it turns out, is very unhealthy.
There is now 3 decades worth of research linking sedentary lifestyle to myriad health problems. What is even worse, you can not completely mitigate the risks by just exercising because prolonged sitting still wreaks havoc in your body.
So is there anything we can do about it? The solution is actually quite simple and yet very difficult to implement due to a combination of factors like our cultural upbringing, psychosocial barriers as well as all the technological advancements of the last century that cater to our lazy human nature and render us immobile.
In this talk, I can only show you the first step to getting out of your chair. You are the one that has to take it. Nevertheless, I believe that by uniting the IT industry around an idea, that I will tell you about, we will be able to stand it up and fight for our health.
