Ant Group's 3+ year's of OSPO Journey to the Global Stage

Ant Group (fintech company with 25K employees) founded Open Source Program Office (OSPO) in 2021. It has been a roller coaster journey to nurture it as the company features primarily a B2B2C business model which doesn't rely heavily on Open Source successes.

Building long-lasting open source engagement can be a really challenging, yet rewarding journey. It all began as a technical strategic initiative with 1 individual working on it part time. After 3+ years, the company now has a dedicated OSPO team of 6+ people, a full fledged Open Source Technical Committee, featuring Open Source as a long term Technical Strategy, and starting this year began the global outreach work very seriously in 2024.

In this duo-speaker session, we'll share our learnings and reflections of building OSPO in a highly dynamic environment with constant challenges from leadership, peers, and difficulties for building sustainable ecosystem. It aims to provide valuable insights for foundation members, ecosystem players and project leads to work with large corporations, even more useful if there are cultural boundaries to break through.

Beyond the Code: Growing in the Apache Community

Nadia currently works at the Ant Group's OSPO (Open Source Program Office) and formerly served as the COO of SegmentFault. Anne Zhu is the community manager for Apache Answer and previously led overseas marketing for a software company. Despite our different backgrounds, we share a common thread: we are not developers, yet we have thrived and grown rapidly within the open-source community, gaining invaluable experiences along the way.

In this talk, we aim to shed light on the myriad opportunities for non-code contributions within the open-source ecosystem from a non-technical perspective. We will explore various roles and activities that significantly impact the community, such as documentation, community management, marketing, and more. Furthermore, we will share insights on career development for non-technical individuals in the open-source world, highlighting the unique career paths and growth potential available.

Join us to discover how you can make meaningful contributions to the open-source community and advance your career even if you are not a developer.

Apache Success in China

The open source movement in China has thrived for over a decade, establishing the country as the second-largest in the world in terms of the number of open source developers and contributors. The "China Open Source Annual Report," initiated by KAIYUANSHE, provides a comprehensive overview of the development of open source in China from various perspectives, including developers, technologies, projects, communities, corporations, education, and commercialization, as well as detailed insights into the growth of ASF projects and communities.

In this talk, the speaker will leverage the "China Open Source Annual Report" as a foundation to highlight the significant achievements of Apache in China over the past year. Additionally, drawing on her experiences as a member of several local communities, such as ALC Beijing and Hangzhou, and her role as an organizer for CommunityOverCode Asia, she will provide a unique perspective on Apache's journey and ongoing story in China.

Can OSS culture be taught? - Ant Group's project journey to Apache

Ant Group (fintech company with 25K employees) has been an active participant in Open Source community with many projects (AntV, EggJS, SOFAStack, etc), yet most projects were primarily governed and operated by Ant Group and we don't actively work with OSS Foundations, Apache Foundation included for a long time.

Founding Open Source Program Office (OSPO) and setting tailored OSS strategy has changed that. In 2023, Three Ant Group initiated projects entered Apache incubation and many of our internal engineers have built awareness and capabilities for working with the community, and Apache Way was a critical component for their learning.

The experience of building OSPO and facilitated 3 projects into Apache has taught me a lesson that in order to build long term open source practices and culture, you need more than trainings and education material. In this session, we share how principles, governance, mentorship and commercial knowledge can work together to get you there.

Enhancing Your Community Engagement with Apache Answer

Q&A is one of the most effective ways to obtain knowledge, build connections, and create interaction. In open-source communities, Q&A is particularly crucial. It not only provides a platform for users and developers to collaboratively tackle technical issues and clarify uncertainties but also enhances the sharing and circulation of knowledge. By helping each other in resolving issues, community members forge stronger bonds and jointly advance their projects. Additionally, a robust Q&A system attracts new members, injecting fresh perspectives and energy into the community. Effective Q&A interactions don't just boost problem-solving efficiency; they also solidify community cohesion, making it a pivotal element in the healthy evolution of open-source initiatives.

Twelve years ago, my team and I established SegmentFault, now China's largest developer Q&A community. Throughout our journey, we've gained invaluable insights into creating and managing a vibrant Q&A community. Eager to extend our knowledge, in 2022, we released and open-sourced our Q&A platform software, Answer. Last year, we donated Answer to the Apache Incubator, marking the beginning of our Apache journey.

I'm keen to share our wealth of experience in the Q&A domain with the global Apache community. This includes insights on enhancing knowledge sharing with Answer, leveraging Answer for effective knowledge retention, and utilizing reputation and privilege systems in online communities. We're excited to collaborate and grow our community together.

State of Open Source Development in China

China stands as a significant adopter of open-source software and hosts numerous renowned open-source projects. With open source being incorporated into the government's 14th Five-Year Plan in 2021, there was a notable surge in China's open-source ecosystem. However, this growth also brought various challenges, including hurdles in commercializing open-source startups, a lack of metrics for enterprises to gauge their involvement in open source, and internal governance regarding open-source compliance, etc.

In a concise 15-minute talk, the speaker aims to offer a swift overview of the current landscape of open-source development in China, intending to assist those interested in China or aiming to enter the Chinese market to swiftly grasp the evolution of open source within the country.

Zen and the Art of OSPO Maintenance - Group Reflection of OSPO Summits

Building OSPOs can be easy, but evolving and maintaining them to continue delivering sustainable and widely recognized value is challenging. Our goal is not only to assist companies in establishing their first OSPOs but also to ensure them continually generate value through community-led approaches.
With this mission, the LFAPAC OSPO SIG, collaborating with OSPO Group and SegmentFault, successfully held OSPO Summits in 2023 and 2024. These summits convened OSPO practitioners, corporate project leads, and community leaders, facilitating collaboration, and earned high praise. Nonetheless, we also encountered numerous inquiries and discussions about the difficulties of sustainably developing OSPOs.
In this panel discussion, we gathered the co-chairs of the OSPO Summits. They will explore these challenges, share their insights and strategies to make overall "OSPO maintenance" easier with the support from OSS Zen and methodologies.
