Technical Writing Workshop

The fear of public speaking is among America's biggest phobias. It tops the list over spiders and even death! Yet, in the tech world, there is a tremendous push to share knowledge at conferences through presentations. Giving a presentation is not the only way to share information. Publishing an article on the internet has an even broader reach.

This workshop helps speakers and writers prepare to write articles about their open source projects and passions for technical publications.

The workshop allows folks to bust through their impostor syndrome and develop a topic, title, pitch, bio, and outline.

The workshop covers:
- Impostor syndrome
- Finding a topic
- Writing a great pitch
- Creating an outline
- Creating a great article

This workshop is an excellent fit for you if you’ve ever felt uncomfortable about writing or wanted to write but found yourself thinking:
- “What would I write about?”
- “I’m not an expert in anything.”
- "I can't narrow down a topic"

SimplyTest.me: The Future Built From The Past

Simplytest.me has now launched a complete rewrite. During this presentation, we will share the history of simplytest.me and the steps taken to revitalize the project. We will highlight how this vision and execution of work has aligned to our values and helps us better achieve our mission. We will review the new architecture of the site and some key improvements made to improve the service. Finally, we will share our first official roadmap where we present our future priorities and quarterly delivery targets.

Markdown in minutes

Markdown is very popular for authors and developers. It's lightweight and straightforward to learn. Its open format allows it to be used across environments and tools.

In this talk, we'll discuss why we should use it and go over some of the basic syntax so you can get started using Markdown immediately.

Issue queue triage - a pragmatic guide to finding an issue to work on

Issue queue triage - a pragmatic guide to finding an issue to work on

Sometimes the hardest part about contributing back to the Drupal project is deciding what issue to work on. That is why issue triage is a vital component of contribution spaces.

Triage is the activity of categorizing, updating, and adding information to issues so contributors know where their efforts are most needed. We will look at an issue from a 1000 ft view, 500ft up, and up close and personal.

Git into the Groove - Moving from Freelance to Collaborative Workflow

Going from freelance to working in an agency can be overwhelming, but don’t let the fear of a collaborative workflow scare you.

What is Git?? Better question, what is version control? And what the heck is the difference between a local and a browser-based development environment?

We’ll cover the basics of
Version control
Overview of a git client
Local and browser-based dev environments, multidevs, and branches

Much as the title suggests, we’ll be using the cheesiest 80s music references possible!

Getting started with Drupal

PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED AT https://ti.to/drupalcampnyc/2021

This training is for people who want to get a solid foundation in Drupal site building. No Drupal experience is required!

With hands-on, guided exercises from start to finish, attendees will have the opportunity to get comfortable with Drupal's administration interface, and build a simple, fully functional website.

You will learn how different concepts relate to each other: nodes, content types, fields, views, users, blocks, taxonomy terms, and menus. By the end of the training, you will be able to identify the different building blocks of a Drupal site and know where to look when modifications are needed.

Learning objectives:
-Step through the Drupal installation process
-Create nodes and understand their properties
-Create content types and add fields
-Configure fields of different types
-Create taxonomy vocabularies and terms
-Create views to display listings of content
-Create, place, and control the visibility of blocks

Setup instructions:
A working Drupal 9 installation is needed to follow the exercises. Online services like https://pantheon.io/ can be used. You can have a local installation using the Drupal quick-start command: https://www.drupal.org/docs/installing-drupal/drupal-quick-start-command Alternatively, you can use a tool like DDEV, Lando, Docksal, or DrupalVM.

Finding a Niche in Open Source Contributions

Come for the code, stay for the community. But what does that really mean?

Not everyone who works on open source projects is a Senior Developer or even a coder. Code is very important and so are all the other parts.

How did my previous life experiences as a Volkswagen mechanic, mother, hospice nurse, and Sunday school teacher prepare me for my role in open source?

Through this presentation, I’ll weave my previous life experiences into my journey in working with open-source. Learn how the secret to contributing can be in our triumphs as well as our failures. Self-compassion and optimism allow us to take risks which leads to confidence and experience, which, in turn, leads to more contributions.

Easy Out of the Box Initiative Keynote Q&A

The Easy Out of the Box Initiative is making the editorial experience clear and empowering from the moment Drupal is installed, by getting the Media, Layout Builder, and Claro modules finished up for the Standard profile.

This initiative is important because media, layouts, and modern administration design are fundamental to creating a delightful user experience for everyone building with Drupal.

We'll give an update on where these features are now, where they are going, and how you can get involved! We'll also show a case study of a large organization using all of these features now.

Community Summit

Join us on Tuesday, April 26 at DrupalCon Portland for a half-day unconference dedicated to exploring the issues that matter most to the Drupal community. What’s an unconference, you ask? It is a loosely structured conference that emphasizes sharing information instead of following a conventionally structured schedule. Together we will select topics that matter most to attendees and have collaborative discussions throughout the day.

There is a lot more information about unconferences online: https://cutt.ly/unconference

But please feel free to contact us if you have questions. Here are some great tips on how to prepare to attend an unconference: https://cutt.ly/unconference-tips

Who should attend?
You! Are you part of a Drupal community or want to start one in your city? This summit is meant to be a meeting place for all Drupalistas interested in the community. Whether you need help maintaining a long-standing camp or User Group, you’re new to the community and want to know where you can get involved, or you want to share a success story from your community, everyone is welcome.

What gets discussed?
You decide! Topics at past events have included:
● Contributing to the community
● Organizing events
● Improving diversity
● Growing local communities
● How to prevent burnout
● How do we foster and grow mentorship programs

But it all gets decided on the day, by whoever is in the room.

The community summit isn’t all about talk, it’s about action as well. Networking is a powerful force for collaboration.

Community summit success stories
Several initiatives have started as a conversation at past community summits:
● The Event Organizer Working Group
● Speaker Diversity workshops
● Internship programs

Please RSVP and let us know what you’d like to discuss! https://cutt.ly/community-summit22

Alt Text: Everything you need to know beyond just "99 Red Balloons"

Images, graphics, and charts are often incredibly important elements in your documents, and that makes it all the more important to make them accessible.

We love to include images on our websites and digital assets. Images support and add context to our information and concepts. Media, especially social media, include images for conversions; having images on posts leads to a higher clickthrough rate and ROI (return on investment).

Learn the art of writing effective alt-text. Never struggle with accessible images and graphs again! Let's apply best practices on imagery from the 80s music scene. From 99 Red Balloons shaking us all night long, to Burning Down the House we don’t want to leave any of our users behind.

Accessible Slideshows - Button, button, who's got the button?

Arguably, the first rule of slideshows is to not have slideshows, but what do you do when the primary stakeholder insists…

According to W3 schools: “Carousels are disputed from a usability perspective because their content can be hard to discover. Ensuring accessibility can also improve usability.”

Together we’ll walk through the different types of slideshows (often called carousels), discuss their components, and dive into how to make our slideshow accessible across different types of users and user agents.

Beyond "99 Red Balloons" - A Pragmatic guide to alternative text

We love to include images on our websites and digital assets. Images support and add context to our information and concepts. They can act as visual cues and help some users orient themselves on a page. Media, especially social media, include images for conversions; having images on posts leads to a higher clickthrough rate and ROI (return on investment).

Images can be simple and easy to add alternative text, but they can also be more complex like infographics, charts, or maps.

Let's take a nostalgic walk through some imagery from the 80s music scene and ensure our alt text conveys the information in a meaningful way for those who cannot access the images visually. From 99 Red Balloons shaking us all night long, to Burning Down the House we don’t want to leave any of our users behind.

Accessibility is a moving target

Despite our best efforts, it’s difficult to future proof a website for accessibility standards. Your code and design may follow current standards, but will your careful compliance become obsolete when new guidelines are released? What happens when the site is updated or content is entered? What browsers or assistive technology agents do your consumers use?

We will review a holistic approach for the complete lifecycle of an accessible website —including how to iterate on existing content without impacting the hard work you put in during the build. Much like SEO...your work is never done. It should be considered in the initial build, then maintenance, complete with sprint regression testing, etc

Attendees will come away from this session with:
- How to get started on improving accessibility on an existing site
- Tips on what useful combinations of user agents, browsers, devices, etc. to test
- A list of free tools that a site owner/content author can use to be sure their website is compliant before and after a build
- What WCAG 2.2 guidelines are on the horizon and how they can impact your current website
