I'm a software engineer based in Austin, TX, currently at Aiwyn. Over the years I've worked across the full stack, from building C# applications that controlled warehouse robots to architecting enterprise design systems and leading Angular modernization efforts. I care about building things that work well, writing code that's easy to work with, and helping other developers level up.

I'm an Angular GDE and ng-Champion, which mostly means I spend a lot of time in the Angular community giving talks, mentoring, and writing about things I've learned the hard way.

Lately I've been deep into AI-assisted development, figuring out how tools like Claude Code can change the way we build software. I write about web development, testing, design patterns, and whatever else I'm excited about.

human-centered leadership. A nuclear engineer, pilot, and former Division I athlete from the
University of Tennessee, she brings a rare blend of grit, curiosity, and compassion to every
stage she steps on. Nikki holds a B.S. in Nuclear Engineering and has complemented her
technical foundation with advanced leadership and management training throughout her career.
Currently, Nikki is the founder of Inside Out Engineering, a groundbreaking initiative that delivers
emotional intelligence training to engineers in industry, academia, and beyond. She is also an
advisor and coach to organizations seeking to build cultures of accountability, trust, and
innovation through people-first leadership.
Her career path spans high-stakes roles across the nuclear, logistics, and technology sectors.
As Director of Program Management at the largest material handling and logistics manufacturer
in the country, she drove multimillion-dollar cross-functional programs while cultivating cultures
of accountability, trust, and psychological safety. Prior to that, she held executive leadership
roles in the nuclear startup space, directing engineering operations for small modular reactor
development. Here Nikki negotiated nuclear fuel contracts, built partnerships with global nuclear
suppliers, ran new product development to ensure the ultimate safety and program performance
in one of the most demanding technical environments on earth.
In parallel with her technical and leadership work, Nikki has been a lifelong advocate for mental
health and emotional well-being in STEM. She has conducted research and facilitated programs
on emotional intelligence, resilience, and workplace culture, translating insights from psychology
and behavioral science into actionable tools for engineers and technical leaders. She has also

I love making sense of complexity — whether it’s ship simulators, EV diagnostics, or fast-moving startup ideas. My sweet spot is where engineering meets empathy: designing tools that actually help people do hard things better.

I work across the full product cycle — from discovery and research to UI, prototyping, and handoff. I’ve redesigned training platforms for skippers, launched a mobile app for trainers and clients, and helped streamline EV telemetry tools.

Along the way, I’ve co-founded a startup and led a small design team, improved design systems, and learned to speak both user and developer fluently.

My background is a mix of UX, logistics, and human-machine interface design. I’m endlessly curious, not afraid of ambiguity, and always up for translating messy real-world problems into clear digital experiences.

Fiona McCarthy spent over twenty years in aviation, helping build medical evacuation networks and humanitarian air operations across Africa. She led international panels on how civilian crews were often the real backbone behind military missions on the continent, navigating high-stakes logistics that made debugging look easy. After watching aviation evolve from hands-on flying to drones and complex automation, she pivoted into digital media, co-founding a fast-growing digital-first radio platform despite having no radio or marketing background.
Fiona's outsider perspective revealed how digital tools often miss real human behaviour, and she now focuses on how developers can design tech that measures authenticity, not vanity metrics.
