Thomas D. Hill

Thomas D. Hill

Thomas D. Hill has played a central role in shaping the success of ESI Construction, a leading general contracting and construction management firm based in Meridian, Idaho. Since joining ESI, Hill has overseen the company’s significant expansion, helping it grow into a global player in the construction industry. Established over 50 years ago, ESI Construction operates across 41 states and 36 countries, providing comprehensive construction services across sectors like retail, education, healthcare, public works, hospitality, and industrial projects.

Hill's professional journey began in the banking industry. From 1985 to 1992, Hill worked in the banking sector in Dallas, Texas, where he gained valuable insights into business and finance. In 1992, he acquired ESI, a dormant company, and set out to revitalize it. With just four employees, Tom Hill CEO focused on rebuilding the company from the ground up. His commitment to growth and excellence led to significant expansion, and today, ESI Construction employs more than 1,100 individuals. Hill’s dedication to his employees is evident in the company’s provision of fully employer-paid medical and dental insurance for all staff, ensuring their health and well-being.

Under Thomas D. Hill’s leadership, ESI Construction has earned a reputation for delivering quality projects, emphasizing safety, and fostering strong client relationships. The company’s commitment to integrity and customer satisfaction has led to lasting partnerships with over 450 clients, including well-known names such as Albertsons, Arby’s, AutoZone, Bed Bath & Beyond, Best Buy, Chick-fil-A, Costco, Homewood Suites, JC Penney, Kohl’s, Krispy Kreme, Kroger, Old Navy, Payless Shoe Source, PetSmart, Popeyes, Ross, Starbucks, Walgreens, Walmart, and Whole Foods. These collaborations speak to Hill’s leadership in building trust and consistently exceeding client expectations.

Hill’s work at ESI Construction has earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious 40 Under 40 award, recognizing his entrepreneurial achievements. One of Hill’s most significant contributions to the company has been his commitment to safety. ESI Construction has completed over 79.5 million square feet of retail projects under his leadership, achieving an outstanding Experience Modification Rate of 0.43. This safety record is a testament to Hill’s focus on ensuring a safe and secure working environment for employees and clients.

ESI Construction offers various services, including construction management, general contracting, design-build, self-performance, and special projects. The company’s construction management services focus on transparency, providing clients with a clear view of budgets, schedules, and quality. ESI’s general contracting services rely on proven project management practices and cutting-edge construction technology to ensure efficiency and accuracy. The company’s design-build services streamline the construction process, minimizing the complexity of managing multiple contractors and reducing project timelines.

Hill also led the expansion of ESI Construction’s self-perform field trade work. The company specializes in concrete paving, structural concrete, earthwork, flatwork, rough carpentry, fixturing, and specialty electrical services. ESI’s Special Projects Division also handles smaller construction projects, tenant improvements, and remodels, while the Express Division offers fast, reliable service for urgent requests. The Express Division is available 24/7, ensuring clients’ needs are met quickly and effectively.

In addition to his work at ESI Construction, Thomas D. Hill is deeply committed to philanthropy. In 2018, he founded ESI Cares, a nonprofit organization that supports community causes. One of ESI Cares’ main initiatives is its metal recycling program, which generates funds to help nonprofit and local community projects. Hill has personally contributed to several charitable endeavors, including donating a car to Notus High School’s Driver’s Ed program, sponsoring field trips for local elementary students, and providing tuition for private school students. Hill and his wife, Kimbra, supported local organizations, such as the Caldwell Police Department’s mounted unit and the Caldwell Fair 4-H Sale.

Hill’s dedication to education is also evident in his philanthropic contributions. He has been a donor to the Victory Center for Autism since 2008 and has sponsored several students at Boise State University, covering their tuition costs. These contributions reflect Hill’s ongoing commitment to improving educational opportunities for local youth.

Thomas D. Hill was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and graduated with honors from Baylor University in 1985, earning a BBA in Finance. After completing his education, Hill moved to Idaho, where he would eventually take the reins of ESI Construction. Hill and his wife, Kimbra, live in Eagle, Idaho, with their two children, Piper and Teddy. Hill enjoys spending time with his family, hiking, traveling, and flying outside work.
