Born in England in 1972, Mat moved to the U.S. in 1998 as a well paid software engineer. A series of unfortunate tech bubble bursts found him soul searching and pursuing a career in photography. The rise of Facebook and smartphones saw his business and bank accounts crumble to the point where his soul came searching for him and he experienced an ego-death. He is also a former Contract Researcher at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Sapienza University of Rome. These organizations use models of basic mental health care that are low-cost, proven effective, and scalable.

Some of these organizations have been endorsed by Bill Clinton, Forest Whitaker, Arcade Fire, Ashley Judd, as well as Zak Williams (son of Robin Williams) and Tim Shriver, founder of the Special Olympics.
