In 1997, Dr. Gratzer was appointed medical staff president at the St. Peter Regional Treatment Center, where he played a key role in policy-making and institutional management. Alongside his clinical practice, Dr. Thomas contributed significantly to education. From 2002 to 2021, he served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School, teaching medical students, psychiatry residents, and law students. His influence extended to other institutions, where he lectured on topics related to forensic psychiatry and mental health.

Dr. Gratzer has been an active member of various professional organizations, including the American Psychiatric Association and the American Academy of Psychiatry and Law. His work on committees such as the Sex Offender Committee and the Psychopharmacology Committee reflects his ongoing commitment to advancing forensic psychiatry and improving mental health care within the criminal justice system.

Dr. Thomas Gratzer's background also includes a notable interest in computer science. In 1991, he won first prize at the Manitoba Science Fair and co-authored a book on the TRS-80 computer. His technical work led to developing the VP-Info database programming language, which sold over 100,000 copies.
