Mario Birkholz ist Professor für Bioelektronik an der Technischen Universität Berlin und Leiter des Joint Lab Bioelectronics IHP/TUB, das vom IHP und der TU Berlin in 2012 gegründet wurde. Als ausgebildeter Physiker kam er 2004 ans IHP, dem Leibniz-Institut für innovative Mikroelektronik, wo er seitdem an den Anwendungen der Halbleiterphysik in Biotechnologie und Medizin arbeitet.
Seine Forschungsarbeiten fokussieren sich auf die Manipulation biologischer Zellen mit elektrischen Effekten sowie auf medizinische Sensoren und Implantate.
