Sam Yoon

Since 2021, Sam Yoon has served as the Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology and Vice-Chair of Surgical Oncology Research and Education at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. His expertise in sarcomas, stomach, and gastroesophageal junction cancers, and gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) has positioned him at the forefront of clinical trials and international medical conferences aimed at addressing the challenges of gastric cancer. This deadly disease claims over 750,000 lives annually worldwide, with more than a million new cases each year.

Renowned for his commitment to exceptional patient care, he draws a diverse patient population across the tri-state area. His contributions to medical practice earned him recognition as one of the best doctors in America from 2010 to 2011 and 2017 to 2020. He practices at the CUIMC/Herbert Irving Pavilion in New York City, with additional offices in Bronxville, Cortland Manor, New York, and Englewood, New Jersey.

Sam obtained his undergraduate degree from Harvard University and pursued his medical degree at the University of California, San Diego. His medical training included a general surgery residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and a surgical oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, a facility designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute.

Before his tenure at Columbia, he was an attending surgeon in the Division of Gastric and Mixed Tumors at Memorial Sloan Kettering. He held a professorship at Weill Cornell Medical College. He also served as an associate professor at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School before moving to his current positions in 2012.

A minimally invasive robotic surgery leader, he has performed over 300 procedures, including sophisticated robotic gastrectomies. This advanced surgical approach uses smaller incisions and the latest robotic technology to enhance surgical precision and reduce recovery times. His academic output is substantial, with over 150 original research articles, book chapters, and reviews. Dr. Patricia Maani Fogelman is the Medical Director of the Department of Palliative Medicine for Mount Nittany Health/Mount Nittany Medical Center. Prior to MNMC she was System Medical Director of Palliative Care for an integrated, 5-hospital rural health system in northern Pennsylvania where key accomplishments under her leadership included: tripling of consult volume/improved reach of palliative care services across inpatient and outpatient domains, reduced length of stay, near-100% rates of advanced directive/goals of care discussion. She was the clinician leader who authored then implemented the system's COVID-19 Crisis Standards of Care Policy, Scarce Resource Algorithm and she was a frontline COVID response partner with ED and ICU teams. In addition, she recruited the clinical research protocol EXIT COVID-19 clinical trial to the organization.

Dr. Fogelman spent 12 years at Geisinger Health System, in the divisions of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine as well as Palliative Medicine and eight years before that at Columbia University Medical Center's Dept of Cardiothoracic Transplant.
At Geisinger, she launched the nation’s first Pulmonary-Palliative Clinic for advanced lung disease management and helped established a system wide Task Force for advanced illness planning. Her Pulmonary-Palliative Clinic model is now utilized at several academic advanced lung failure programs.

Dr. Fogelman is a member of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) national roundtable for Supporting and Sustaining the workforce to care for people with serious illness. She is an avid national educator and advocate for Palliative medicine and advanced lung disease, authoring numerous publications for the Oxford University Press’ Palliative Care series, co-author of the joint society taskforce for the American Thoracic Society Policy Statement - “Palliative Care Early in the Care Continuum among Patients with Respiratory Disease,” (formalized as a national ATS policy Sept 2022), Vice-chair/Society for Critical Care Medicine Clinical Policy Task Force on Guidelines for End of Life Care in ICU. She is an Assistant Professor at Columbia University and host of “Pulmonary-Palliative Care for Advanced Lung Disease,” a podcast with the American Thoracic Society. Most recently, she joined the Board of Directors for Pennsylvania Pink Zone, the breast cancer philanthropy of the Penn State Lady Lions Basketball team.

Dr. Fogelman received her BA at SUNY Geneseo, her BSN and MSN at Pace University/Pleasantville NY campus and her Doctorate at Columbia University. Megan Shen, PhD

Megan Shen is a social psychologist and an Associate Professor at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. She received her PhD from Baylor University, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and faculty appointment at the Center for Research on End-of-Life Care at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. She is a leading expert on death, dying, and grief and with that hope, resilience, and coping. She has expertise in health communication and decision-making, looking at how our cultural and social environments influence how we interpret information and make decisions. Much of her research focuses on understanding and developing tools to support patients and families in making informed healthcare decisions at the end of life and coping with advanced illness. Central to her work is understanding how to find resilience, hope, and meaning in the face of challenging realities.

Dr. Shen has received multiple grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for her innovative work on supporting patients facing terminal illness, and she has consulted for Fortune 100 companies and industry leaders. Her work has appeared in multiple outlets such as the Huffington Post, USA Today, Forbes, Entrepreneur, and the Hill Reporter. She is a regular contributor to Harvard's Bill of Health blog and has her own column titled "How to Grow Hope" at Psychology today. She has appeared on NPR and CBS News Los Angeles (KCAL).
