She was well on her way to tenure at The University of Texas when she realized a need for less mouse and more human interaction. She followed the inflammation pathway to the pharmaceutical industry – pursuing both bench and clinical research opportunities in the field of allergy.

Dr. Sowers served as a lead research scientist in the US-based, allergen research lab at ALK, a global, allergy-focused pharmaceutical company. Her research made significant contributions to the bench-based understanding of allergen extracts and their use in both human and veterinary allergy immunotherapy. Her abilities to analyze and translate scientific data to commercial and clinical strategy prompted a transition from bench science to Medical and Scientific Affairs, where she spearheaded a team of PhDs and MDs.

Dr. Sowers presently serves as a clinical and scientific consultant, a lecturer, an educator, and a scientific/clinical strategist. With more than a decade in the field of Allergy and Immunology, Dr. Sowers is considered a subject matter expert among her peers.

Rebecca’s passion for mindful leadership blossomed in Fall 2019 while working on wellness initiatives and learning about mindful leadership practices at the Office of School Health in NYC. That Fall, she attended the Mindful Leader Summit and began researching mindful leadership in depth to inform her work and career path. She wrote her master’s thesis on using mindful leadership to create mindful healthcare workplaces, enhancing the well-being of healthcare professionals and improving patient care.

At the University of Rochester, she practices mindful leadership in her efforts to support student mental well-being through innovative health education. In this role, she directs the Mindful University Project, promoting a mindful campus culture. She directs the Mindful Professor Training Program, works to develop contemplative spaces at each school, teaches meditation workshops, silent retreats, as well as leads workshops on mindfulness, self-compassion, and yoga.
