As a Lead Developer Advocate at Dell Technologies, Laura Santamaria loves to learn and explain how things work to bridge the gaps in engineering disciplines. She is a cohost of the Cloud Native Compass podcast and was the curator for A Minute on the Mic, a cohost for The Hallway Track podcast, and the host of Quick Bites of Cloud Engineering. In the past, she’s worked in many roles, including as a software developer, an ops specialist building and running platforms, a part-time CTO, a technical writer, an editor, a science educator, and a literacy and education researcher. In all of these roles, she spent time building, maintaining, and observing communities of practice. As a community member, she co-hosts multiple meetups in the Austin, Texas, area, including Cloud Austin. For many years, she taught Python for the Women Who Code Austin meetup and co-hosted Austin DevOps, as well. She is an organizer for DevOpsDays Austin, DevOpsDays Texas, and PyTexas, all community-run conferences. David Flanagan

David Flanagan

Founder of the Rawkode Academy, open source contributor, and beloved husband and father to my wife, two amazing kids, and a plethora of animals.

David has been developing software professionally for nearly 20 years, starting with embedded systems written in C back in 2004, and has spent that entire time learning the paradigms of different programming languages, including C++, PHP, Java, and Haskell - though more recently preferring to work with Go, Rust, and Pony.

As a professional technology magpie, David was an early adopter of cloud, containers, and cloud-native technologies. During his time as the Director of Development for a rock and metal media organization called TeamRock (now LouderSound), David was responsible for the software, infrastructure, and website during its biggest test: the unfortunate death of Lemmy Kilmister. Fortunately, due to his desire to experiment and play with new technologies, David and his team had already migrated their slow to provision virtual-machine centric infrastructure to containerised workloads running on Amazon Web Services the year prior, 2014, not long after the public launch of Docker.

As much as David enjoys writing software, scaling infrastructure, and leading teams, he quickly realised that his passion was helping others learn and be successful. David started presenting at local user groups in 2016, slowly working up to conferences, before eventually moving into a full-time Developer Advocacy position at InfluxData - where he presented and taught workshops at 42 events in 2019.

Outside of technology, David enjoys reading science fiction, drinking craft beer and whisky, and very-very-very slowly learning to play the piano.

It is safe to say that I have an odd mix of experiences. After graduating from Penn State University, I worked for the federal government for a decade in various analyst roles doing things as mundane as personnel budgeting and as exciting as presenting to the Director of the FBI and testifying as an expert to grand juries.

After leaving civil service, my next decade was spent attempting to perfect theme park vacations by working for TouringPlans.com. We used statistics and lots and lots of research to optimize peoples theme park trips and I assisted in many ways from research tasks and writing to starting a travel agency to filming YouTube videos that have over 1 million views.

Now I am a consultant at Centric Consulting, helping companies rethink their data strategies. I am thrilled to once again share my experiences by speaking about data strategy, project management, consulting, statistics, theme parks and, frankly, anything else.

I began writing thought pieces on sustainable design, diversity, and inclusivity while I was still a design student who was trying to find my colours.

I actively look for opportunities to advocate for gender-inclusive design practices and had the opportunity to present a talk at a design conference last year, based on a collective case study on UX design in e-retail platforms for Fashion and Apparel, highlighting common gender-binary biases. It was while researching for this that I realised that the data gap isn’t limited to a particular industry like fashion, but lacks in general. These biases show up in the products that we interact with every day.

This, along with the rage from blood-boiling statistics in the book 'Invisible Women', by Caroline Criado Perez, prompted me to work on 'Designing Value Beyond the Binary'.

As a non-binary person, motivated by my lived experiences as a consumer and driven by my spirit as an informed UX designer, I believe that Inclusivity shouldn’t be an afterthought. I can safely say that, having been on both sides of the coin, the designer and the user in this context, empathy goes a long way. Making one feel seen and heard can be so validating, and that validation shouldn’t be something that feels extraordinary to experience. It should be normal.

I'm here dropping my two cents to be part of something that creates value.
