Philip Skorokhodov

Philip Skorokhodov

Philip Skorokhodov is an esteemed academic focusing on history, political science, and international relations. His research delves into historical themes like the Second World War and urban studies in cities such as Moscow and Paris. Proficient in both Russian and French, he has dedicated much of his career to educating students at various levels, from high school to college.

Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Philip began his education at Manzano Day School, later advancing to Albuquerque Academy, where he was recognized for his exceptional abilities in History and English. His academic prowess led him to Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, where he joined the Honors Program and earned a Bachelor's degree in History, minoring in Political Science. His undergraduate thesis, "Who Won the War? Teaching the Young Generation: The Case of France (1946-2008)," critically examined the French education system's approach to teaching World War II history post-Liberation.

Philip's thirst for knowledge took him to Paris for a year during his junior year through the Internships in Francophone Europe program, enriching his understanding of French culture and politics. He then pursued a Master of Arts in Social Sciences at the University of Chicago, completing a thesis on "The Second World War Debates in Russia (2000-2010): Political and Academic Obsession," analyzing the ongoing debates over the war in modern Russia. His studies covered various topics, from Latin American Civilization to Soviet History.

Continuing his academic journey, Philip enrolled in a PhD program at Arizona State University, focusing on his dissertation titled "A Tale of Two Cities: Food, Hunger and Rationing in Moscow and Paris during WWII." Although he completed all required coursework and exams and achieved ABD status, he has yet to defend his dissertation.

His research has been extensive and international in scope, including significant periods spent in historical archives in Moscow and Paris. He focused on wartime government rationing policies and their impact on urban populations. He also worked as a research assistant, gathering data on the abolition of the death penalty in France and translating important Russian documents for a biography project in New Mexico.

Philip has a rich teaching background, having designed curricula and taught courses such as Western Civilization and U.S. History at Arizona State University. He also served as an adjunct faculty member at Chandler-Gilbert Community College and taught Russian at the Arizona Academy of Math and Science. His role at the Albuquerque International Association further showcased his event planning and community engagement skills, where he coordinated educational trips abroad.

Fluent in English, Russian, and French and proficient in Spanish, Philip's love for languages has fueled his extensive travel throughout Europe, where he has explored diverse cultures and histories. Beyond his academic interests, he enjoys various outdoor activities, including skiing and hiking, and is an avid participant in cultural events like concerts and museum visits.

Philip's life is enriched at home by the companionship of his beloved corgi, Ryzhik, who provides joy and comfort through life's challenges.
