Amanda Hartley

Amanda Hartley

My name is Dr. Mandy Hartley. I have always loved science and even at school I knew this was the career path I wanted to pursue. I have a PhD in Genetics and have had an amazing career working with DNA for over 15 years. I have used DNA to help conserve stocks of haddock and sandeels in the North Sea and to find out the genetic cause of diseases in patients with neonatal diabetes, haemophilia, breast cancer, cystic fibrosis and different kidney diseases. I also helped set up the forensic laboratories used by the Norfolk Constabulary, worked on criminal cases and helped trace long lost families using relationship testing.

I now regularly run workshops to teach primary and secondary school children about DNA. I also use stories to teach difficult concepts such as natural selection, inheritance and evolution to children. I am currently getting funding for my GSCE Genetics workshop which will provide an applied approach to secondary pupils allowing them to see how the genetics they are learning about is used in the industry.

I am in the process of creating a science laboratory in Norfolk for children aged 4 years - 18 years. It will be a state of the art laboratory offering children in this area hands-on experience of methods currently used in the field of genetics. In addition, it will be a great opportunity for children of all ages to experience workshops for all aspects of science in a real laboratory.

My first book “The DNA Detectives – To Catch a Thief” was recently published with the second book planned to come out in June next year. These are the first books for 7 – 12 year olds where the characters in the book use DNA to solve a crime. The idea is that children enjoy the exciting story and at the same time they are learning about DNA, cells and forensic science.

I have been so lucky with my career which has come from my love of science and now I get to share that with children and hopefully inspire our next generation of scientists and geneticists.

I have been in role and working on leading wellbeing and resilience within my school for the last two years in a senior leadership role, and prior to that, I developed skills and a passion for making changes in wellbeing and resilience in school for 3 years in a middle leadership role. Prior to teaching, I worked in a health-related role. In that time, I have seen the importance of a well-delivered, whole-school approach to wellbeing and resilience in ensuring that the school is led in a Mentally Healthy way, and this has become something that I am passionate about sharing with others.

I am a medical microbiologist and infectious disease physician by training. After completing my PhD in 2019, I was awarded the IMPRINT post-Doctoral fellowship, which I held for two years. Following that, I transitioned to my current position as a Tenure Track Fellow at the University of Liverpool.
My research primarily focuses on investigating the host response during infections and understanding the mechanisms of protection, with a special emphasis on major neonatal pathogens such as Streptococcus agalactiae (commonly known as Group B Streptococcus or GBS), Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). I aim to comprehend how bacterial and viral coinfections modulate the disease course in humans and affect the microbial ecosystem in both health and disease. Additionally, my research extends to understanding the immune response against these pathogens following natural infection or immunisation, leading to the discovery of correlates of protection for vaccines.

I first became interested in group B streptococcus research when I observed an increase in streptococcus bacteria in vaginal smear slides of pregnant women compared to nonpregnant women in a study I worked on as a research assistant. This observation led me to do a study on the rectovaginal prevalence of GBS in our population, an area that had received little focus. This study was part of my MSc studies at the University of Nairobi. After my master's studies, I took a Ph.D. fellowship in infectious diseases and global health at the University of Manitoba. As part of this, I followed up on my Msc study by conducting a study on the vertical transmission of GBS in our population. This study is ongoing and the results will be out in 2024. To advance my research skills, I have taken courses in research management, conducting research, and project management. I also work as a laboratory coordinator in multisite clinical trials. My interest in GBS led to join the Young ISSAD committee to promote GBS research and raise awareness of the same.
